Is it me or do the majority of standard
Absolutely.
The way I see it, car companies employ highly-trained, supremely talented people to do their styling, and it's an absolute joke that somebody with no idea of style, taste or visual flair can go to a similarly qualified fibreglass-monkey and expect their car to look anything other than a complete heap of dog muck.
But that's only one man's opinion.

Accurate one though.

i like a subtle modded scoob , wheels, exhaust , and a few cosmetics , but i do agree that some do look ridiculous and over board
Your not wrong. My Impreza was sonic blue and with P1 front lip and P1 spoiler it looked really good. Then I looked at pics when it had no other stuff on it save what it came with (low level spoiler, no lip) and I wished I'd left it alone. Looked so much more classy.
If it comes with it as standard (like a P1 for instance) then fine but standard looking MY99/00 cars really are starting to look very cool.

Agree I much prefer the standard look or a few choice mods such as exhaust, wheels nice grill etc. I did go silly with add on's when I first got mine but it just looked like all the rest out there so I removed the silly red mud flaps, spoiler, scoop etc. I am now happy with how it looks. 90% of the parts are there for performance and not looks.

I've always been highly amused that many Subaru owners (and it does seem to be mostly Subaru owners) feel it necessary to sticker their cars up to look like a rally car. They even put Solberg and Mills in the back door window or better still their own names!! Genius.
Standard is best, always has been always will be ...... an example:-

another example is changing orange indicators to clear.
each to their own.
Bob's wardrobe was styled 30yrs ago and is now totally back in fashion...
A few choice styling mods can improve your car. Clear indicators and, maybe a change of alloys could always do the trick. I would never go down a full bodykit route though...

I think some tasteful mods certainly improve the overall looks, it is a personal choice after all. I hate body kits with a passion but have done a few tweeks here and there

All Subarus are bland at best, or just ugly. But that's not what they are about so it doesn't matter.

Not sure that comment applies to Subaru to be honest. Think they have just been using the bloke down the pub to scribble something down on the back of packet of pork scratchings.
