IF it's a genuine FQ 300 then it was imported here, then modified in the UK to that spec. To all intents and purposes it's a UK car.
Not much to choose performance wise I'd say, so you'd better book your STi in for mapping!

All 'FQ' Evo's are UK cars based on the Evo 8 GSR, the imports are just GSR's.
Get the chassis number and check with your local Mitsubishi dealer. It should also have a small 'FQ 300' badge with the cars build number on the gear surround as well if it is a genuine FQ.
If it has a rear wiper this usually indicates a Jap import if memory serves me.
Mitsubishi did sell the std 280 BHP GSR in the UK as well as the FQ versions starting with the FQ 300, so even if it's a GSR it could still be a UK car.
The service book should show the original supplying dealer and Mitsubishi main dealers only supply approved UK cars.

A std 1995 WRX equals an FQ340 to 120ish.

You are correct that classics are quick when modified due to them being light weight, but standard the newer cars have increased power to compensate for the weight and are quicker.
You are dreaming mate if you think a standard 95 WRX can live with a 340bhp Evo. at a guess power wise you would need to be running 300 bhp just to stay in touch.

Someone I work with has the fq340 (uk car) and that has a rear wiper, so I don't think you can tell by that.
As for a standard wrx keeping up with it, think not.

Two types of FQ evo 8, either an early FQ300/330 or the later MR FQ300/320/340/400.
As stated earlier all start life in Japan as a GSR/MR respectively and are imported officially and altered to the relative FQ spec.
All FQs have a rear wiper and a fog in the rear bumper and a 6 speed, evo 8 260's have a 5 speed, no fog in the bumper and no rear wiper. FQs have a numbered plaque by the gearstick and will be badged as such.
MRs have an alloy roof panel which has two ridges running down either side which are quite noticably different from the other roofs.
