owner has quoted between £350-400 so far which i think is way too much...

Assuming the bumper isnt cracked, so would need replacing it should be just a respray job. Lots of body shops will spray a bumper for around £200 or less. If its a main dealer who is doing it then probably more like £300+

My wifes MGF had similar damage from a slow rear end collision and the bill was over £600 - this did include a new bumper ( about £150 IIRC ) and was done by a main dealer, so a quote of £450 doesn't seem that odd, even if it is pricey compared to an independent body shop.

Remember as well the garage will charge labour for taking it off and refitting.

Ok, let me clarify my previous post.

there are two options.

One is to send it to a bodyshop, who will remove the bumper, repair the damage, and respray the whole bumper. this will cost you somewhere in the region of 300 quid, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less.

The other is to get a SMART repair done, which involves the repair being done on the car, and the area sprayed kept more localised. This is what I do for a living, and I would charge roughly 120 quid plus VAT from what I can see from the pics, as the only damage appears to be that you have taken the paint off. As I said before, it's 3 hours work tops for a good smart tech.

Cue the hordes of people who will now tell you you should never have a smart repair done as it will fall off, destroy your car etc. etc. when actually they have pretty much no idea what they are talking about.

PS I'm not touting for work either!

I've paid £150 for a respray of a bumper due to paint flaking off and £250 for a bumper which was cracked than repaired and sprayed.

Sound like you don't either. Smart repairs are equally prone to imperfections in finish quality and durability.

I had a smart repair on my Civic bumper, took the guy about 4 hours. I asked what it cost and he said typically about £300. It looks good at the moment, but I will have to see how it stands upto the elements. There are 1 or 2 small imperfections - where he's had to blend in some stone chips.

If he's been quoted between £350 and £400 then it sounds like he's shopping around - if it's his pride and joy then he may have his own view about smart repairs (he said not getting involved in that one!)...

If it was me I'd be annoyed that it was being questioned on a public forum (suggesting he's trying to rip you off if I read between the lines - I accept you're trying to get a view on what's an expected cost but he may well frequent these boards and take a different view) but also that some of the pictures clearly display his reg number.

thanks to all those whove offerred advice...i just wanted to get a general opinion...

no offence to the above poster but i dont need to be lectured about mentioning this in a public forum...ive already told him ill be seeking advice/shopping around so i dont really see what difference it makes...and to those whove said 'pay up' whatever it costs or that i might be implying hes trying to pull a fast one, im not, but alot of people wouldnt have admitted to causing the damage and as my girlfriend was honest about it even though she could easily have done nothing, i want her to pay what is a reasonable amount...

hes being reasonable about it but that doesnt mean we should accept the first quote he gets...

Someone did that to my last car, they refused to pay the Dealer quote so I went through the insurance to get it. As it was bent I got them to pursue a new factory finished bumper which I got. Why should I have a smart/repair fixed bumper when it was perfect before it was hit. If you are trying to avoid an insurance claim then you haven't really got much leverage and IMHO you should pay the man, you hit his car afterall.

£400 doesn't sound like a lot to me for the repair, the inconvenience of having it done and of course not having to declare your accident which would normally put up your next premium

okay, to clarify a little...the quotes he has been given are from chips away (400) and an independant specialist subaru garage (350)...the last quote was to completely replace the bumper which isnt damaged and is suffering some paint dulling anyway...

if it was damaged, there would be no question about paying what was necessary, insurance or not (based on a few quotes), to replace it, but all it needs is a respray and the bottom line is were reluctant to pay 400 quid...

im happy now that im not the only one who thinks the initial estimates are a bit high...i dont want to turn this thread into an argument about the rights and wrongs of it as everyone will have different opinions on it...

This is the rear bumper of my Elise which has aquired some damage Went to my local Lotus dealer and was quoted £270+vat for the repair, so i guess that make the spray job on the Scoob seem rather hefty

went through insurance so not sure of repair costs but was very gutted as i only had the car a month but no matter what the damage was id expect the best job possible, the way i see it is it may cost u £400 to repair it but at the end of the day once its been repaired it will never be the same, i had a brand new bumper put on the car but i can still tell that its not the original i notice it everytime i see the car

I`d say just pay it. £400 is not a huge amount of money but as you`re neighbours could save you no end of hassle in the future.

Personally i would only go to Scooby garages and they makes you pay, that looks like it's through the paint and down to the skin in places too... I was quoted a grand and a half for an old Scirocco rear quarter moulding and touch up spray by vw/audi round my way 10 years ago, so upto £400 for possibly a new bumper or at least repair, resmooth and respray, well it's gotta be cheaper than ballsing up her no claims discount, or having a claim against?

Seems a bit high really, considering from what can be seen from the pics it is only the paint that is damaged.

Just needs a rub down & respray.

Even if the bumper was slightly cracked, body shops can repair them easily these days.

The cost will mainly be made up by the labour time/charges that the body shop decide to quote for. However, some places do take the **** with their "estimated" hours!

Let's put it this way. Excessive argument is likely to see him put it through her insurance, isn't it? Or would she then dodge that?

From bitter personal experience, you have to regard the discussions you're having as a negotiation.

Personally, I'd bite the bullet and recommend he gets the bumper replaced.

Not wishing to Harp on about it but:-

1: the owner is a neighbour
2: It is a classic scooby (should be acknowledged)
3: Doesn't matter what the paint / finish on the bumper was before it was damaged
4: HE will have to waste his time getting it fixed (to and from workshop) being without car for a few days etc..
5: He more than likely frequents this forum (or his mates do)

if it was me, i'd give him the £350.00 and a few beers

if i was him and i read this, i'd go through the insurance.

Thats my take on it

Hope it gets sorted out amicably, nothing worse than neighbours having an "atmosphere" !!! especially a fellow scooby owner

If you're in Bedfordshire, a couple of places you may want to try are Fieldhouse and Husbands in Dunstable or Littleknocks near Uxbridge. Both will do a great job. Probably somewhere around the £250 mark I'd say. The former are absolute pros (they do Mercs normally) and know Imprezas too.

Littleknocks do smart repairs and get a very good press here. Have had a similar scrape on a bumper - see below. Little knocks charged me £246.75 and that included getting rid of a stone chip on the front wing. Repair job was perfect and I simply can't "see the join". That was last year and no problems with the work since then. Will use them in the future.
