Have a V reg SPORT with no mods - what can i spend my money on

What mods will go on, without seriously messing about with the car?

I've got an R-reg Sport mate.

So far I've changed the side repeaters to clear ones, changed the alloys for gold 16" STi rims, installed Infinity Ice and MP3 player. Oh, and a ScoobyNet sticker on the back window

Next up is a new WRS spoiler, exhaust (Magnex now make one for the Sport) and a Pipercross induction kit.

Should tide me over till my no-claims build up a bit

sensible sports mods for openers


ITG or similar panel filter
FSE rising rate fuel prssure reg. (will pull a little better, MPG UP!)
Eibachs and alignment
Back box
"Tart Parts" .. clear indicators etc.
2nd hand 4 pots or change of pad/disc.

All are fairly insurance friendly and give big per £

What about a Superchip fit your motor
non-turbo i believe a 12% increse in BHP and 15% more torque for £ £ 200.00 for +15 BHP (125-140) ain't bad value for money.

I had one fitted to a Vectra 2.0L - noticeable difference!

Woooo Phm - sounds like you spent some serious cash. Mines a 97 Sport - transformed totally when I took it to TSL for their own back box (tailor made for the Sport) and an ITG filter. Also got some 17" turbo wheels which instantly transforms appearence.
Not sure what to go for next- it can get to the stage dont you think - when maybe you may as well of bought a Turbo?

Thanks for that - but maybe its a case of making the most of what youve got. Sure I would love a Turbo - I could have bought one for the same price - all be it 1yr older or so - but we havent all got bottomless wallets when it comes to running costs. The Sport is a great car in its own right -and a damm sight less expensive to run than its Turbo brother. Performance wise, as standard, the Sport handles and performs better than youre everyday car and I am flipin proud to be an owner of one. You shouldnt presume all Sport drivers are too skint or stupid not to own a Turbo - far from it.
Dont get me wrong - I think the Turbo in all its forms is a fantastic car - this is why you will see me at meets etc - just for me and probably other Sport owners we each have justified reasons for not having the Turbo. The money we save in petrol alone will pay for a little nore bhp or better handling, so whats wrong with that?

 

i am with jac2000 here.
a well driven sport will give a turbo a run for its money over the twisty bits.
sport owners add something to meets, namely they can get the beers in while we are waiting for the turbo to cool down

I agree with Jac, the turbo is a fantastic car but on the other hand, people shouldn't under-estimate the normally aspirated versions. I must confess to being border-line when I got mine between the turbo and sport, but for me the Sport clinched it, mainly for the cheap insurance for the wife! Besides, because the chassis is equal to the turbos chassis in all aspects, due to the lesser power, you won't upset it unlike the turbo where a blip of the throttle could quite easily send your back end out.

it's called the GX (well, thats the best N/A you can get)

Decent tyres, 16" wheels and driver training is what is needed to make a sport go some. They are only 115BHP standard, not 125BHP. The 125BHP version is the sport special.

A brake support bracket is a good adition for braking feel, some spot lamp conversions help a lot for fast night driving too.

The sport has a few significant diferences to the Turbo in chassis dynamics. It has no rear Anti-roll bar and no rear LSD. It is also softer damped and sprung and sits 1" higher. This means you get more body roll, in the wet it's actually a faster car as it's almost 100Kg lighter and has more mechanical grip from the soft suspension. My sport can run rings round a turbo in wet conditions.

Most people think lowering a car and stifening it up make for faster motoring. In most circumstances on the public road it doesnt, it just feels like it because you have to work harder to control it. The only time it is faster is on smooth tarmac in the dry.

I have standard brakes, i have never had any issues with them on a public road, i have driven sub 10 minute laps of the ring 4 up passing ex works rally cars in the process in a completely standard sport bar the tyres/wheels and brake support bracket. In the real world a sport can stay with a turbo with 2.5 times the power if it's driven to it's limits properly. On track of course the power drop is a big disadvantage, but who wants to track a sport anyway?

Hate to disagree John... But all my99/00 Sports had the 125PS (123bhp) motor, not just the Sport Special. Pre my99 had 115PS motor.

I disagree too, My 97 sport produced 135 bhp on a rolling road without any mods. It had a serious flat spot at low revs which i thinks is an inherant prblem as when I complained about it the garage told me they knew the car(very suspicious). I do agree though that with a set of 17" wheels I could and did give turbo's a fright on the twisty stuff. I now drive a Peugeot 306 TD as I was doing too many miles to run a sport, with it being 25 mpg which is similar to a turbo. The Pug is just as quick as the sport and more fun to drive, and it can go twice as long before needing to visit a filling station. I do however have plans to get a fast car again but I think it will not be a scoob

i know for sure MY98 and prior are 115BHP, i do recall all the sports being listed by Subaru on their web site as 115BHP except the sport special until the bug eyed monster apeared. I could be wrong on post MY98's but thats what Subaru said?

135BHP on a standard sport, dont think so. RR are so acurate aren't they.
