Dilema...two big name's with Scoob's
I have a dilema Guy's.
Im not going to name names and bitch because i respect both companies and i have no disbelieve thier advice.
BUT! lol
one company is telling me to replace my clutch with an uprated custom item and all shall be well, costing around £750 inc vat and fitting.
The other company telling me that a new gearbox and a whole lot more work and bits are needed to get the same result, totaling £4200- £5200 Fitted.
Both companys are BIG names in subaru tuning, both companies i respect, and so do 100's of people on here. Im now torn between what to do. Iv spoken to both companies a couple of times and thier advice hasnt changed. so i dont think it can be a mistake.
What do i do?
Take the £750 option and live in fear that it wont last..... or take the £5k option living in regret that i could have saved £4,250

£5k u can get one hell of a engine and gearbox for that kind of money
am ne expert at gearboxes but for £5k i would want the gearbox be linked to my brain so it can scan it and change gear as i think

The best thing to do is take the car to a specialist, and get the car road tested to show the fault in motion with a mechanic sat beside you, don't assume the advice is right over the phone, It can all depend on how you have described your problem...

Define the problem best you can (to anyone, the Companies, the audience on here)
2
Detail the solutions given by the 2 involved.
3
Tell people on here for some opinions/experience. There are some on here who really know their stuff, one at least has replied already.(not me!)
4
With more concise facts you stand a very good chance of a correct resolution.
Facts and detail = accuracy.

A 2001 GX thats been converted to a Sti.
full loom, turbo, block, exhaust, brembo's, suspension, etc etc
running the standard gearbox. No problems running 0.6 bar of boost. (abs light is on so low boost i believe after 4krpm) And i have given it some abuse. no full throttle launch's etc, but plenty of bean's.
However slightly concerned that it wont take the power once i get it mapped with FMIC, CAIK, Full exhaust and decats. And that it will spit little teeth all over the road!
One company said to replace the standard GX clutch with an uprated Custom race type item, as the gearbox is essentially the same as a wrx and could handle the power (final drive ratios are different)
The other company said that i would have to change the gearbox, the pedal set, flywheel, clutch and release bearing. and a few other items.
I think im going to go see one of the companies after the new year, take a day off work and go see them. They have always talked me through everything before and i respect there work.
If the guys that have offered me advice read this, please dont be offended, i just dont want to make the wrong decision.

I retract my statement about just doing the clutch now, why bother having an STI engine if your only going to run a 0.6 BAR.
If your doing the converison, do it properly and whack a 6 speed in, and all the rest

6sp box isnt an option for me, too heavy, too expensive, 75% of the cost of a PPG, fitting would be a nightmare too because of the dccd, and wiring etc.
a 5sp Sti box is tho, thats what i was recomended by one of the companies.

Because its in safe mode because of the abs light on. I aint planning on running 0.6 bar dude, thats my dilema, once its running full boost, im hoping to get it mapped 350bhp ish.

You dont have to have DCCD with the 6 speed.
Well whatever happens you need to change the gearbox to something else, so maybe the 5 speed STI would be good for you.

Try and seek a third opinion if at all possible..!
What ever £5k, is a hell of a lot..!
IIRC you can have a 6sp fitted for ~2-3k, you don't need to have DCCD connected BTW..
I agree on the extra weight (~30kgs), however, there are ways of loosing this elsewhere, if not already done..
Finally, can anyone confirm the GX gearbox is basically the same as a WRX..? If so, I'd go with uprated clutch.

I think you are going to need the clutch anyway....
Gearbox is down to you, ham fisted monkey = dead box, sensible use and it will last a while till 300+ lb.ft. of torque kill it.
Non DCCD six speed is only £1500 ish ! If you can find one.

Is it just me who wonders why the OP didnt just buy an STi in the first place rather than try and upgrade a GX ??? By the time you have bought all the parts and done the work, it would be easier to have just bought a proper one ???

Because i couldnt justify doing what i wanted to do to a 2004 Sti.
Basically i needed a shell, as cheap as possible, since i had a GX i have made something unique. I agree i have spent more than i should have, but i have one hell of a car. even standing looking at it as it is, without the gearbox, i have learnt so much. much more than buying a sti can give you.
It may be the crazy way round but, thats the route i picked.
DCCD box, would require all new driveshaft's and poss hub's, wiring for the dccd, the pedal set, flywheel etc etc. £1500 and same again on other bits. then same again on labour fitting it all.

I didnt know that you would need hubs drive shafts and a flywheel!, maybe its different as its a GX
When I was quoted from API for this conversion this was never mentioned, and the fitting cost iirc was around £500
