Fuel Protest Due To Start This Saturday
Just found little beut on the net;
Britain's roads could grind to a halt within days as a new fuel protest threatens to echo the crippling blockades of seven years ago.
Pressure group Transaction 2007 warns it will set up human barriers around oil refineries on Saturday to protest after prices soared over £1 a litre. Spokesman David Handley said: “I have never seen so many people who are prepared to do something.
“My advice to Christmas shoppers is fill up your car now.
“We will not blockade with lorries, but we are going to refineries and simply blockading with people voicing their opinion.
“We are not aiming to bring the Government to its knees, as in 2000. We aim to negotiate peacefully."
Seven years ago, motorists queued for hours after petrol supplies ran low. The Government had to use the Army to get fuel out of depots.

The Government learned the lesson way back, they have stockpiles now - no fuel shortage.
But, the damage will be done with people queuing at the pumps in a panic
I'm just off out to fill the 3 cars to the brim

The ONLY thing which will do ANYTHING is panic buying ...................... and that will just annoy everyone who realises that things have a price, if you want - you pay.
No want? Buy a Diesel!

Why dont people protest about stuff that genuinely important, rather than the marginal cost of fuel.
Here's some for starters, the millions of people in danger in Darfur, or deforestation in South America, or the appalling treatment of women in many Arab countries (from which we by the stuff)
The best way of protesting is to stop buying the stuff, and not inconveniencing everyone else with silly go slows and blockades.
Sorry if this isn't a popular view, but the reality is fuel is expensive and it's going to get more expensive in future protests or not!

The real problem is the excessive and wasteful spending of this control freak government leading to the massive taxation of fuel. Fuel blockades hurt the wrong people. Its Downing street or Parliament that needs the blockade so Gordon gets inconvenienced. Of course this Government have created yet more laws just to protect themselves from this sort of rightful expression.
I doubt there will be much panic buying, as the protest is not blocking petrol stations or refineries. Its just a go slow drive to draw attention. I wonder where I should go on Saturday.

somethings has to be done. I have work saturday but I would have no problems in joining in the protest.
I'm always willing to back up my words with actions.
Someone needs to stand up to these bullying half wits who try to govern us.

I agree, I haven't voted for this bunch in years. Neither in local or general elections.
The way this bunch try to control everything I'll be surprised if we even get another chance to vote.
Labour will probably ban it on the grounds that it causes climate change or some other load of bollocks.

Any thoughts on this (produced in defence of fuel tax etc)...

From: Tellins, Home of Super Leagues finest, and where a "split" is not all it seems.
"Its just a shame in the namby pamby liberal country we now live in that the army and police wont be drafted in the "move" these selfish plebions from their "peaceful" blockades" said slightly right of centre smug diesel owner Abdabz, today.
In 2000 tanker drivers were threatened, punched and their trucks were vandalised etc, because for all the good intentions in the world, a "pack mentality" brings scum with it...
It cant be a peaceful blockade with people as the blocks, because they'd f'king move if I was driving the truck
Protesting is one thing, we live in a free country and are entitled to, but why not over things that really matter? Maybe this country we all moan about is pretty much perfect in every way, if the only thing that unites the tabloid readers is the price of fuel

"Fuel protesters threatening demonstrations this weekend at refineries and depots warned motorists and hauliers yesterday to "fill up by Saturday" and promised a winter of discontent unless ministers moved to cut prices.
One organiser predicted hundreds of people would be outside big storage installations but said there would be no blockades of deliveries of petrol and diesel. "We don't want to spoil Christmas shopping for the general public," said David Handley, chairman of Farmers for Action and a member of Transaction 2007, a pressure group urging further action next year if the government does not respond to complaints."

A good idea to protest but affects those trying to go about there daily business.
My idea would be,
Abolish road tax discs.
Keep fuel some kind of fuel tax.
Those of us who do the miles pay for it.(me included)
Those who do less pay less.
If your cars parked up it cost you nothing except insurance.
Govt. would save money not issueing tax discs.
Any other thoughts?
If the roads were like France or Germany (well maintained) I would not mind paying the tax, but it goes into other pots like building a Millenium Dome etc.

However, only a tiny fraction of the revenue raised goes back to transport in any shape or form, with a smaller fraction still being for roads.

Not when the exchange rate has been the same for practically the whole year, when the price of oil has gone up 42% in three months no.....
