wiper problem

wiper problem
Bear with me on this... My 95 WRX import has failed its MoT because of the front wipers.
It's not the motor. My friendly local garage man described the broken bit as: "The rod from the wiper motor to the near side arm." Something to do with plastic covers at each end (one of which is either non-existent or broken/worn). He added:"It's a wonder it hasn't fallen off."
My questions are:
1. Does this make sense, ie do you more mechanical guys understand what he means?
2. Can I get just this bit or is it part of a kit (and therefore what else do I need?)?
3. What is/are the part numbers or failing that, what is the proper description of the parts required?
4. Any suggestions as to where I can get them other than a main dealer (there isn't one within 50 miles of me and probably expensive...)?
Apologies for being mechanically inept, but this is urgent now the weather's turned and I'm going to need wipers (never mind an MoT...).
