Default insurance cover note question...

if mods could please help me out and leave this until it's answered that would be much appreciated

in a nutshell i can't find my certificate of insurance, i have every shred of insurance related paperwork going back 4 years, but no certificate for this year.

my question is, are the cover notes printed by the broker or are they printed by the insurer themselves, then forwarded to the broker and then to me?

now while it's possible i've mislaid the certificate, i think the insurance company haven't sent it out. i've got the receipt for this years premium,a letter saying 'we have pleasure in enclosing your policy documents' and a cover note. all dated the same day (which was 8 days before the policy expired)

so, is it common practice to send out a certificate before it's due to take effect or have they sent the cover note out because the certificate will follow? (and it either hasn't or i've lost it)

only found out i haven't got it as my window got broken today and i need to show the fitter a piece of paper i haven't got

any help would be great

Can't answer for all companies, but at Keith Michaels we'll normally issue a certificate straight away, or a 30 day covernote (issued by us) then forward the certificate when the insurers send it down to us (usually 14-30 days after the original covernote is issued).

TBH you should always chase your company if they haven't sent you anything, as you are always supposed to be in possession of a valid covernote/certificate when driving.

Hope this helps.

cheers mate (was kinda hoping you'd see this) sounds like it would probably have followed on then? i thought this might be the case but wasn't sure as there was no mention to this in the letter i recieved

normally i'm right on top of paperwork but can't for the life of me remember anything else turning up and it must have slipped my mind.

one other thing you might be able to answer if you can please moley, i've got to get in touch with my insurance company to tell the window fitters i have got window cover/am actually insured as i won't be able to show them my certificate, does this work as easily in practice as it sounds on the phone? or am i in line for some more agro with the fitters?

You might need to produce a certificate when having the window done, but your company should be able to fax a copy of one accross to you, which the fitters should accept
