Thinking of getting a Scooby, please help..
I`m thinking of getting a standard Scooby, maybe around a 1995.
What is reliablility like on the older models, what things should I be looking for??
Also, Insurance wise, would a WRX be a lot more to insure than a UK car.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks in advance

Age is the main problem with insurance.. I found the WRX a lot more than the uk car.
Things to watch for... clutch and turbo are going to be the most likely.. cars of that age are going to start to develop nigles. Make sure its been surviced regularly etc. I forked out for an AA check (Dont know how much good it was.. more peice of mind I suppose), gives you a bit of comeback if something does go wrong.

When you say 'standard' do you mean the SPORT, or one with a few more bits on.
The SPORT has the legacy 'BOXER' unit which will go on and on like the energizer bunny.
As long as it has been looked after, then all you will need to worry about are the usual probs associated with any car purchase.

As Dizzy says, age seams to be a major factor when looking at the difference between a UK model and WRX. My WRX cost an extra £100 over a UK but i am 34 which may make a differance.
I've had a MY95 WRX for 2 years now and had no major problems what so ever. It's a great car and has it's own special qualities. Although bland inside compared to some other cars, the drive makes up for it, and try get one with Air con and a sunroof if possible. Oil and filter changed every 4000 miles in additional to normal servicing, and still drives perfect.

Doc, there's quite a large meet happening in a few days time, why don't you come along and you can talk to loads of different drivers about costs, experiences etc. Most of them will bore you to bits

but in the main we're a good bunch who love to waffle about our cars.
I work in Ilson so you may have heard me around
E-mail me if you fancy a lift dude

Hi Gridlock, I`ve seen your car about
Blue Impreza with a Subaru sunstrip if my memory serves correctly, I see it mainly travelling too and from work (Nottingham).
The forthcoming meet, is it the RS/Scooby meet at Derby?? If so i`ll try and make it this month as i should be there owning an RS
and collar some of the Scooby lot.
I have contact with a Scooby nut at work, which is why I am interested in buying one, but being 30yrs old he cannot help much on insurance matters + with 260BHP on tap is a bit outta my league regarding performance as well

Hi mikey you will see him travelling to work in my peugeot gronholm rally van with me.
Because his cars do more millage on his drive than they do on the road.I keep telling him to get rid of the slow fiesta turbo and buy a scooby. Then we can race hard together.will flash you next time we see you.

Doc,
Not patronising, but don't be fooled by thinking a cheaper showroom price makes an older scooby more affordable. Servicing and parts is the same cost as a later car (unless done under warranty). More will need to be done as the car ages. Watch out for scary 45k / 90k service cost.
Make sure the car has got good or recent disks, pads and tyres. This is a sign that it has been looked after. Beware if these consumables (+clutch) are worn as the costs to replace all can come up to 25% of the price of an older car.
Good luck with your hunting and take your time - seem to be pleanty out there to choose from.

Good luck.
