Hi all - some of you may remember a family i spoke about who dumped their Porsche AND BMW 3 series in favour of a 98/R Scooby from Sparshatts.
Well they find the seats very bad for their backs, I have a MY00 and have a lot of adjustment so find them ok'ish (but then I suffer from a bad back anyway) this big gut takes some holding up!!
So, a few questions:-
1) Are the seats really bad - all views taken
2) If so has anyone changed their seats? if so, what to??
3) Where is the best place to buy some replacements? has anyone got any lying about??
Thanks all - I am sure you will want to help keep them in the fold and not allow them to slip back into bed with the germans??????
Pete

Pete, I drive an MY00 and my colleague at work has a MY98/R - seats in both are very similar - never had any problems in either car (and I have had back problems as well). Guess it comes down to personal choice. I've seen a few seats for sale (from the P1?) is it worth trying these as an alternative?

I reckon the seats in my MY00 are better than those in my previous car (Mk 2 Golf GTI) but my wife reckons they're a bit on the hard side. I could do with an extra notch further back on the seat runners though, anyone know if lanky-bloke spec runners are available?

Thanks for the advice Buddy - but not sure that changing to a Legacy another unknown quantity is sensible or financially practical!!!

Personally i dont find anyproblem with mine although my drivers one is in slight need of repair (MY95), could try demon tweeks or similar and test a few.

I reckon the drivers seat is adjustable enough to get comfortable in, but the passanger seat is chronic if you are tall. I get back ache after about 20 mins - still just an excuse to make sure I always drive.

I think you need a chiropractor chaps. Probably cheaper than changing seats, and a lot more fun(?).
I'll do you a deal next trackday!
Andreas.
Joking aside, my own back sucks as well!

I suffer from a bad back and find my MY98 and now MY00 seat the best. Can drive all day with no problems, previous cavalier and sierra always gave problems. I guess its down to the individual.

Pete,
Have Recaros in mine I find them 1st class but my wife, who suffers back problems, finds them too firm. We looked at swapping them for the orthopedic seats from Recaro but this worked out at nearly £1500. A local foam firm has cut her some fitted pads to fit the seat and she is now OK.
I know this doesn't help your friends just warning you to be careful what they are buying if changing seats.

My MY98 came with the dealer option Recaro/Prodrive seats. Best seat I have ever sat in. Has a hand pump (OOHH ER)for lumbar support

NOW their Scooby won't start !!!
Have we lost a near convert??
Its all my fault too!! I told them how great the scooby is!! oh dear I am in BIG trouble
Thanks for the comments on how the Gold Wheels make the car more comfy - I cant see it myself .... as they would get shoved so far up my A4SE by those who know me that I wouldn't be able to sit down for a month (they KNOW I have got good taste, see?)

MY00, the seats are fine, once you learn how to slouch properly. Could do with the seat being longer as no support for the underside of my leg, bit of a pain on any 4hr + journeys (have though about hack sawing about 2 inches off my leg, but seems a bit painful ).
Best car seats I have ever sat in have been Recaros, they cost an arm and a leg, but save your back. (Depends which parts of your anatomy you regard as most important )

I do miss my Recaro Leather seats from my last cosworth, they were fantastic. The best seats i had prior to these were in my old Manta GTE Exclusive (great sideways driving car) they were Recaro's too.
I only have the basic impreza seats now in the Sport and i find them OKish, dont offer any side support though, which is a pain when pushing on
The seats in the 22B are really great though, pretty firm, but i found even on a long journey like the nurburgring trip i was perfectly comfortable.
i do find when i get a new car my back hurts a little for the first few weeks whilst i get used to a new driving position, maybe your friends will experience a similar thing?

I too find the MY00 seats the most comfortable ever - although I'm on the limit of "back low, front high" adjustment on the squab. This includes long journeys (6 hours plus)- and I've had my share of lower & upper back problems in the past.
I'e also had very favourable comments from (female) passengers on short & long journeys
My only niggle is that the "wings" squeeze a bit low for me (short git with big lats - rock climber)

I am an old git, 18 stone and 6' 6", with an MY00 DBM and a history of back problems. I find the seats the most comfortable I have ever sat in. (in a car!)
But the seat does squeeze my ribcage a bit, and it would be nice if
1) the seat would go back a extra notch (MY01 beter in this respect)
2) the steering wheel was smaller in diameter
3) The pod on the door with the window switches in it were somewhere else.

JD,
I am 6'6" and also find my MY99 seats the most comfortable I have sat in for driving.
Only problem is where my knee rubs against the drivers door on long journeys.
I am surprised about your comments on the MY01 though. When I sat in one recently, there was no where near as much leg room. My knees where almost in the roof as the seat didn't go back half as far as my MY99's do.

The MY01 I sat in was the wagon. I dunno whether that made any difference.
Someone did comment that when I had the seat back there wae only about 2 - 3 " space for rear passenger's knees, etc.
But it was a bit better (for me!)
JD
Yes - I get the knee problem too - I have thought about cruise control, or even a 3 ft stick (hand throttle!) to give my poor right leg some respite.
