Question

(Hopefully) a hypothetical question but my Mum said there were some lads hanging round my street tonight and it got me thinking:

- If I looked out my window and some someone or some people are trying to break in to my car, what would I do:

1 - go out armed and attack them out of rage - probably not a good idea being as they know where you live

2 - open a door or window and try and scare them off

3 - call the police and wait for them to arrive doing nothing in the mean time - and hope they don't steal the car by then - I think this would be quite difficult in the heat of the moment.

4 - Give them the keys to prevent potential harm to yourself/family. Would this still be stealing?

Would appreciate you views on this

Put my coat & shoes on, put the collar & lead on tyson, casually walk out to the car, open car and put dog inside, remove collar and lead from dog, wind windows 1/2way down, close door, leave doors unlocked and go back into house.

Car will still be there later no probs.

How do I know this?

Did I mention that Tyson is an 8 1/2 stone rotweiler

Open front door, let the ridgeback out, followed by the labrador followed by my carrying bobby the baseball bat

If you have none of these then its your choice but do not go outside with just your fists unless you are bruce lee

Calling Plod is possibly the safest & slowest method, they may have got the car by then

interested how many people would send their dog into a fight first???

my dog is a bull terrier- its nuts, out of its tree, cant take it out after 6.30am in case it sees something and tries to kill it. (in fact whenever i see post about how "my big hard dog is really cuddley" it makes me chuckle- cause mines a wacko)

anyway point is hes qualified for scumbag biting... but i wouldnt dream of sending him out anymore than id go myself?

if i was a car theif i would have no hesitation killing a dog (it seems most dont care about human life)

just seems odd that people would risk their pet?? or are you all kidding?

Tiggs

PS- would post a pic of my dog but it would eat the camera and Mrs Tiggs gets pi55ed when he eats expensive electrical goods

the only thing I would point out is that it doesn't matter how armed you are ... dog ... baseball bat or whatever .... please take note of the fact that ....

PEOPLE WHO ARE INTENDING TO NICK YOUR CAR ARE MORE THAN LIKELY TO BE ARMED THEMSELVES ... AND QUITE POSSIBLY WITH A GUN - the number of gun related crimes is really getting out of hand at the moment ... the statistics are absolutely terrifying ...

so dog v gun ... baseball bat v gun ... no contest is it really.

Don't think I have to remind anyone about the story in the news at the moment - the father-of-two Kevin Jackson who tried to stop some scumbags from stealing his mother-in-law's car ... they managed to kill him with a screwdriver.

I know it's hard .... but,

DON'T BE STUPID .... YOUR LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR CAR

sorry Bex, but I would still have a go. with either a D lock or my Louisville Slugger. and with regard to the dog thing, i've been on the receiving end of a dog attack and its terrifying. it would make the average car tea leaf think twice I'm sure.

Better idea - I get her to shoot them instead....

ever been attacked by a dog when you have a weapon? when your buzzin' with excitment? when you've got a mate with a weapon whos also pumped up? when you're scum? when you'd happily lay into a grown man let alone a pet?
when its kill the dog or go to jail? when you have no concern for others lives?

its possible a car theif may react differently to you and i?

I must say I'd be tempted to shoot the ******* with a shotgun.. the law wherby I'd get done for manslaughter is a joke.. if the tosser didn't break into my car he wouldn't be dead.. simple as that!

Cool

Take it from me - your best weapon is your brain, this scum have not generally got a fully functioning brain, so use yours!

1. Do NOT go out armed with a weapon - it WILL be used against you, because (and I dont care who you are) you will get it taken off you!

2. A dog is no problem for the hardened criminal, it will have its legs ripped apart (dead instantly) or shot - however hard you think your dog is, it is humanised and will NOT attack a human (unless trained)

3. If we are talking kids then a walk with the dog will do wonders.

4. Criminals with guns who want your car?? use your brain and let them take it!

What would I do? I would go out with my Alsation and fists of course!! BUT, I would leg it if it looked like I may get hurt - believe me ................ its just metal and rubber for gods sake!!

I am bordering on 19 stone and work out at the gym 5 times a week and I WOULD run away!! You little lads and lasses worry me with your talk of baseball bats and such like

I guess the bottom line is you do not know how armed the thief/ves would be so to go out there or send your pet out would be to risk a life.

Having said that - that leaves the option of doing nothing and waiting for the boys in blue.

trying to scare them off by shouting??

or my favourite - Dave's Option 7 (part 2 ). In all seriousness, if you did shoot someone to prevent them stealing your car, is it quite possible that you could go down for something?

if you shoot someone for stealing your car you deserve to be sent down for being a ****

that said the theif also deserves that you hit him between the eyes and kill him.

every action a has a reaction- if you go out stealing you should be aware that a possible reaction is a "hero" will shoot you.

if you shoot crims be aware you might get nicked- we all know these action/reactions the same as we know if we speed we may get caught. do it by all means but dont complain when the obvious happens.

There is always someone harder or a dirtier fighter than you - even if you have got a bat/dog/whatever - car thieves, considering what they do, have a bit of bottle, being as there are risks of getting caught and battered. Maybe they have a bit of bottle cause they are also handy and prepared to do anything to get away with it - as mentioned above for that poor bloke in Halifax.

All you who would go out with a bat - how often do you fight? have you ever used a baseball bat on someone in anger? - if you haven't, and don't know how to, the likelyhood is you will have it used on you.

It's difficult, especially for us blokes, to stand by and let it happen, but the best course of action is probably to call Police, disturb them without putting yourself at risk, or threaten them with a bat hoping they run away - if they don't - get back inside, quick.

To be perfectly honest though, if I went outside and thought I could take him/them, I may do - but luckily have never been in such a position, and hope I never am, even though I would love nothing more than if it happened, to end up having beat the cr@p out of the thieving gits.

worth giving some thought to....

if you have a go with a bat (i assume we mean baseball not flying mouse type ) then how do you go about it?

you approach the theif- he spots you and stands his ground, he may have blade but who knows? its a bit dark.

"run off you scallywag" you shout but he says "nope, give me your keys" so what do you do? have a swing? where do you aim? body? head?

how hard do you try to hit me? enough to knock him out? how hard is that? do you give it everything you've got and aim for the head? if you get him then well done but watch out for a) his mate or b) the courts. but of course if you miss him then youre in trouble cause he now thinks hes in a fight to the death and thats a bit of change for you cause 5 mins ealier you were watching eastenders- now your fighting for your life!

of course if you dont hit him hard enough he wont go down but will be mighty pi55ed at you and may slap you about, probably with your own bat and i'd doubt he be to concerned about how hard to hit you.

fighting in your 20's is not like fighting billy at school cause he nicked your chopper and it aint like a van-damme movie. personaly i'd rather watch easties.

A hardened Criminal with a gun is not going to steal your car, they would not risk getting caught, getting caught stealing a car is a slapped wrist, getting caucht stealing a car & carrying a gun is a different ball game.

Most car theives are little scum bags who are being paid a few quid to get the car or have the radio, they may have a knife, screw driver or what ever, they may have a bit of bottle but I dint for 1 moment think they would risk standing still when people relaese their dogs, yes I may have a ridgeback & labrador but they still have teeth, & can run I would leg it if I saw a nutter with a baseball bat releasing 2 dogs & screaming get them, so to who ever said spread their legs & dead, yep that will work, but have you got the ***** to stand still, Catch a 6, 7, 8, + stone dog that is jumping at you and then spread its legs, it will pull the dog bloody close to your head, & if you are starting to hurt the dog its not gona be happy, especialy with the other dog going mad as well.

Have I hit anyone with a bat, yes, its ahorrible sound, sicking in fact.

Then again the car theive could have a gun, some bit of sh1te shot a young girl in the head for her mobile in east london the other day

Choice is yours, I would still have a go

Unhappy

This is a very serious issue.

I had my cossie broken into last thursday, and came out to find myself 5 yards from the guy breaking into the car. It was only the alarm sounding and the fact that I was out of bed and down the stairs like Linford Christie that I nearly caught the guy.

The police turned up very quickly, and told me that I was very lucky I hadn't caught the guy - apparently one of the largest injuries they deal with concerning motor vehicles is the vitim of the car crime being further attacked by the theif.

I gave it all the large, saying if I'd caught em etc etc..... but bravado might get you injured or killed. Disgraceful I know!

As much as i would say I'd have a go I'm afraid reality wouldn't see me trying much apart from calling the police etc. I'm not the biggest person in the world and I can't remember the last time I was in a fight so I doubt I'd be much good in a scrap. It's not that I'm a wimp just that I don't particularly fancy taking a battering or worse even if my pride and joy is being stolen.

Word of warning - if you are going to tackle someone trying to steal or damage your car and you do them damage then be prepared to charged. I used to work for a construction company that was working on an enviromentally-sensitive site and had been told that the local crusties might pay us a visit to return some damage on our cars. We were informed by security specialists that under no circumstances could we attempt tp stop them as any harm to a human being is held in a much dimmer light than damaging or stealing an object like a car.

I know a guy who parked his car and when he went to leave it and young lad approached him and said, 'Do you want me to watch your car for you mister ? It will only cost you a fiver and it will be safe. The man a bit weary of the young lad, and certainly not wanting to give him money said, 'no its ok son. My Rotweiller is in the back seat. The cars going nowhere. Just tell me how you beat his reply ????????

The young lad said, 'CAN YOUR DOG PUT OUT FIRES ?'

Thieves are a pack of .......s, but unfortunately none of us will ever be able to beat them. So dont try !

Thumbs up

no one can do much when flat out due to 180,000 volts (auto tazer)
not so legal (nor is car theft) but you are allowed to use reasonable force. the car must display a warning signe

setting you dog on some one is also an a fence and you would be charge for
assault even if they were stealing you pride & joy
imo

Baseball bat, mad dogs, fists? All of the above are not bad, but combine them with the kettle of water that you just boiled......Hard to fight anyone with your face falling off, plus they cannot use it against you afterwards coz it's empty!

KF has a good point!

Stay in the house and you are in more of a position of strength.

After phoning the Police and taking a picture, trip your house alarm to make some noise - thieves don't like noise. If you have some hefty neighbours, call them as well (especially is one is a farmer with a front lift on his tractor ). The rest of the street will be woken by your alarm anyway, and you might need some support if the scum-bags try to break into your house.

Grrr - it gets me angry just thinking about these anti-social *****!

Sorry, just had to say that this country favours the rights of criminals over victims in this country and it sucks ***! I'm sick and tired of how little yobs and thugs that can steal your pride & joy and get less of a sentence than if I was caught doing 150mph down a deserted motorway.

Surely, there has to be something wrong with this state of affairs. Perhaps, it's a case that those in power don't know how to try stem this epidemic - but surely that's what they are put in government to do? Am I wrong or just plain naive?

I remember going to the cop-shop after having my car broken into and the utter lack of interest in the police to do anything about it other than get me to fill out a Victim of Crime leaflet was pretty soul-destroying.

Rant over.

I had that with my last car when it was broken into. I rang the police and they said "what would you like us to do?" How about shift your @rse and get over here right away, dust for finger prints, get out the helicopter and the dogs, at least put down your cup of tea.

I think after reading through the thread my general feeling is that due to the risk and the police's attitude in such a situation it would be best not to go out and confront the thief/ves but as someone else rightly pointed out: who knows what your real reaction would be in such a situation.

I think the kettle of water is not a bad idea but again: you cause them any harm and they know where you live, then you are probably going to be living in fear of some kind of revenge.

A photo if possible would be good and I guess any other action to worry the thief: house alarm, lights.

Having said all this, if I did see this happening I think I would be feeling a huge amount of rage judging by how I felt after someone had "only" keyed/dented my car.

Trust me no matter what you think you'd do when it happens and adrenalin takes over you'll do something different. I couldn't even remember the numberplate of the car that tried to jack me.
