V Power. You'll get better MPG from it so it's worth paying the extra.

Normal unleaded wouldn't do any harm if its standard, but agree with all above, go for V Power.

the main reason people recomend you use a higher octane fuel is to prevent pre det (knocking) the higher the octane rating (RON) the greater the resistances it to igniting before the spark plug fires. the higher the engine temp and pressure the more likely pre det will occur.

I use normal 95 ron in my Scoob, returns 270-330miles (motorway driving) per tankfull. Never found the Vpower to return more than 270miles to a tank - go figure Never noticed any power differences going between the two either.

I am happy for you

I wouldnt put anything less than 99 octane in mine personally but then that is what it is mapped for.

A std WRX should still be run on 97 ron minimum but will run on 95 - but if you were to check the engine happiness it will have wound back its performance accordingly.

95 RON will be fine if it's standard, never run either of mine on anything else and sold my last one on 93,000 miles and my current one is on 86,000 miles.

That test was for non-turbo cars wasn't it - prefer to see same test on turbo cars.

They used a VXR (which has a turbo) but didn't show any of the results! I too would like to see the turbo test results.

They originally tested Optimax v BP Ultimate V 95 ron (as seen on 5th Gear) using an STi. Shell Optimax gave noticeably more bhp and torque than the other two.

Yeah, seen that a few times, but would have liked to see the specific results from these monkeys to compare with the beemer.

I use Tesco's finest and it runs quickly and smoothly. I tried standard unleaded once and the engine just didn't feel right at lower revs... a bit spluttery. Doesn't do it any immediate damage but as stated above they are designed to perform better on better fuel.

I find that on my normal driving I get about 5% better economy using normal super unleaded versus 95RON, however on the Mway where its rarely on boost, I see little or no difference, so don't bother with the expenive stuff if I'm doing a long run.

for daily runs i reckon 95ron is fine.

if you're gonna gun it (most of us dont to and from work) use 97RON+

From Fifth Gear. They tested a;

STI
Clio
Golf GTI (2.0 Turbo)

Fuels:
Normal Unleaded @95 RON
BP Ultimate @97 RON
V Power @99 RON

Figures were taken on a dynapack (bolted direct to the driven hubs):

Renault Clio - gave the same bhp on all 3 fuels (82bhp)
Golf GTI - The Shell gave 5bhp more than normal UL, BP gave 2bhp more than UL.
WRX STI - The Shell gave 15bhp more than Nornal UL, BP gave 8bhp more than UL.

Torque figures of the STI showed only slightly ahead of the Ultimate.

The conclusion was that 'higher RON fuels are only worth the money if your car can adapt to it' and only worth it for high performance cars. Non Turbo cars were better sticking to normal UL.

I'll second that one - most or even all of the extra cost is cancelled out by the better MPG and the bonus is that V Power's got to be better for the car.

I've posted graphs on here before of my car running otherwise identically on Tesco 99 and V-Power, and the V-power, while not giving any real power/torque gains, resulted in a far more healthy torque and power curves due to holding boost for longer.
