Hi fellow Scoobynetters,

Actually the TD04H was fitted 5 weeks ago. I thought I'd relay my experiences for the sake of those considering going down a similar route.
My object was to have a quick road car without sacrificing the remapped 01 WRX's driveability and responsiveness.

Andy Mc's brief car modifying career.

I'm a tad lazy when it comes to DIY mechanics, but decided that fitting the STi intercooler would be easy enough (LOL). I did so, then drove the car and thought "****, that's fast". In fact so much so, that I thought that there must be something wrong given that I'd only fitted an intercooler, so I kept the revs to 4000.

Later I was going along the motorway doing 70-80mph when I felt a "tug" from the engine and saw the engine management light go on. I immediately took the car to Chris Allen at Linton services, where it was in any case booked in to have the other bits fitted. Chris took one look at it and said "Ah, you've burst your wastegait pipe, lucky you didn't rev it any harder because the boost was out of control ! "

So ended my DIY modding career.

Mapping Day

I took the car to Andy F's a week later. Andy initially had problems getting his laptop to connect to my car's ECU, apparently due to a dodgy interface on the car. However, after half an hour it was all systems go. Andy uses a long stretch of road that connects roundabout and a junction , but is fairly off the beaten track. The curve half way along is gentle enough to allow pretty high speeds. IIRC we used 3rd and 4th. Andy confirmed the DeltaDash figures to be 305/297, which I later had rollng roaded at a fairly close 301/290.

I must confess I was initially a bit disappointed with the figures at the time, since I had anticipated about 320bhp. Having said that, I was at no stage disappointed with the way the car drove. The topline figures don't really tell the whole story. To explain, the turbo can first be heard (but not felt) to spin at 1800 revs. By 2500 revs you have 1 bar and the full 1.4 bar is reached at 2700 revs. By about 3200 revs you have some 275ft/lb of torque, resulting in an enjoyably flat torque curve.

So from 2500 revs you have good turbo assisted overtaking, from 3200 there is a distinct kick and a giant hand pushes you against the driver's seat.

Comparisons with other turbos

Well, any other turbo change will give you more power but I was reluctant to lose any of the TD04's responsiveness and quick spool characteristics. Depends to what extent you value the "surge" and how important driveability is to you.

Is the Hybrid TD04 actually any better than the remapped std TD04 ?
Yes, despite the fact that the topline figures don't seem so much higher the reality when you come to drive the car is that you have a noticealbly stonger mid-range and it definitely pulls better to the red line.

Rolling Road Day



This was a laugh. I took the car to Dastek in Fife. They're pretty well respected for giving lower end (ie realistic) figures. However, they had a wee "blip" when they called me through to the very noisy (ie the fans) rolling road and told me "Your car's producing 358bhp, that's very good", to which I replied "It would have to be, since with those mods the car should be less than 320bhp !". The boss was called over and pointed out that the wrong software was being used (LOL). After the correct info was put into the computer the figure of 301/290 was arrived at, which as I said suggests that the DeltaDash figures aren't too far off the mark.

By the way, before he did anything the rolling road operator said would like to take the car out for a drive "to check everything was running ok". On his return he said "Whoever mapped the car did a good job, it drives very well and the power comes in nice'n'early" (Thanks Andy ).

And finally, now to the Halle Berry impersonation

Andy F mapped my 99 classic last year and the TD04H is the exact same route I want to take next,hopefully in the next couple of months,when I get the cash saved.
Your figures are roughly what I would have expected as Andy told me to expect approx 35bhp on top of my current map of 265bhp.
I also love the low down reponse of and smoothness of my TD04 and current map and just want to extend that a little further towards the red line.
Based on what you have said it has reinforced my view that it the route for me.

Spot on m8 - TD04H would be my next upgrade as I would miss early spool-up if I fitted anything bigger.

Pub figures for bragging rights only mate; how it drives i.e. the amount of space under those lines on the graphs is all important and it sounds like you have a lovely wide powerband!

BTW 300 is about right, IIRC Andy F himself said that the TD04 Hybrid would probably produce about 20-30ish bhp less than a VF35. Most of the latter conversions run about 320-330 ao you're on target mate!

TD04 Hybrid £400 with TD04 trade-in.

Yes, when I asked Andy a few months ago he said that the difference between the TD04 Hybrid and the VF35 was "20bhp and 300 revs". This year I've spent more than enough on the Scoob, but you may have noticed a couple of non-essential mods (particularly the STi Pinkies), which leave me in a postion where I could simply bolt on a VF35 (if I had a change of mind), get some ported headers and a remap and - bob's yer auntie !

At the mo IMHO I have a very usable drivers car that has more power than I can use often, so I'm very happy with it.

Glad to see you got round to fitting the hybrid, I remember you talking about it several months back. Equally glad that it's delivering everything you hoped. Not quite so glad that it makes me feel the urge to spend money on replacing my turbo and TMIC!

Anyway, nice write-up, you've reached what IMHO is a very nice level of well considered mods within sensible limits - happy motoring!

 

Nah, no plans to sell the TD04H at the mo.

Just hope a 300 bhp 01 WRX will last for another 4 years - I reckon I need to keep it that long to make it all worthwhile !

Replacement lip spoilers and side skirts are not really a problem.....however rear spats and diffusers for the newage can be a bit thin on the ground

It's hard to tell if the side skirts on that one have the "bulbous" section to the rear that mine have, although the front splitter certainly looks the same.

Thought Fulham21 did polishes ? Or is that someone else ?

What gear is this in?

That makes very interesting reading, I have had a VF28 fitted which, when the car is running properly produced full boost by 2700rpm in fifth and 320lbft of Torque.

Had a VF28 fitted to my old MY04 WRX, I believe that the turbo come from a Impreza P1 or V5 Type R???????

Was a good turbo had the same sort of mods as your WRX but I had equal length headers and it made 312bhp 298lb/ft on Powerstation rollers!!!!! Only difference was that the car was slightly more laggier but not much that you would notice coming from a standard TD04.
