Default ABS warning light

Weird thing - my ABS light came on and stayed on the other day. I suspected a dodgy sensor. Then I noticed a brake light bulb was out - changed it and the ABS light went out!

Thought I'd post that piece of wisdom for what it's worth.

Mine's just come on as well on my MY98 WRX - but then goes off again after braking a couple of times however my brake lights are both ok.

Without any sort of diagnostic equipment how can you tell which sensor is actually causing the problem ? and what's involved in replacing one ? not that i'm thinking about doing it myself

cheers
