Another rear shocker problem......
My WRX MY05 has a knock from the rear strut which the dealer is replacing on Friday. I understand this is a very comon problem with inverted struts and one which in many cases does not seem to be easily fixed (i.e the noise returns).
Does anyone know if there is a modified part to sort this problem out and if so do you have any further details re part numbers etc. I just want to make sure I get it sorted whilst it is still under warranty. It seems pointless replacing a faulty part with another faulty part.
Cheers

I don't own a newage, but from memory I think the only known guaranteed fix is to go for aftermarket suspension. Eibachs are a common choice. I'n not sure if thats the response you wanted, but there have been several people going through several sets of shocks without a fix until they just used a different make.
You can quite rightly argue that you should expect more from the standard components, but the aftermarket ones are not that expensive, give better handling and I think a better ride too.

I will probably experience this soon, I am picking up my 05 STi this weekend and I am worried about this problem.
The car has done 10,000 miles so I am hoping I won't have any issues for a while. Anyone know what mileage this problem occurs or if its just a case of "some have the problem, others don't".
I am going to contact a Subaru garage and ask for the shocks to be replaced on the back just for peace of mind but I think at some point I will want to upgrade to after market shocks. I think most people go through a few STi shockers is due to the warranty i.e. may as well use it while its there (the warranty on mine runs out soon I think).
Can anyone recommend good quality aftermarket shocks/coil overs that will retain the same ride as the STi shocks (they are borderline okay for comfort)? I had a look at AST's and Tein's, AST's are out of my range and I think probably not what I need. I noticed Teins have several types in the range starting from £650 odd but not sure which ones are actually any good - any recommendations?
Ideally for myself and the chap above, need a solution that is not too costly over the standard STi or WRX shocks but offers same/adjustable damping and ride.
Cheers,
Fz

I have just started getting the rear knocking.
First question... is this doing any damage, and am I risking an accident by driving with it for now ?
Quite happy to buy aftermarket replacements to change all shocks, as the car is on 60k now. But dont want to change the ride height, and dont want to change the ride quality too much. Any suggestions?

Mine started at 16k miles (rear left), from what I have read it would seem that near side rear is the culprit nearly every time. You can hear it clearly when the car is parked and you bounce the car on the shocker.
I am sure I have read somewhere on here that Subaru now have a modified part to resolve this problem. Hence my question to avoid having to pay for this when this the car is out of warranty.

I've had two new nearside rears on my 05 wrx, it's going in on the 17th for a 50k service where they will also 'investigate' the noise from the offside rear too.
Like they don't know what the f'ing problem is!
Each time they take the car in, 'investigate', and then have to order the bits in.
I know what the issue is. They know what the issue is. Why do we have to go through this each time?
FFS!
Anyway, last time it was done I thought the 'upgraded' item was available but doesn't seem to help.
As far as I know it's not dangerous, but it can't be good.

both rear struts replaced under warranty on my 05 sti (13.5k) and rear off side shock just replaced at last service last week (17.5k) my car is serviced every 6 months and has never been on a track or been abused by me at all, one of those things i guess. My warranty is up in november this year so may pop it in just before to make sure nothing obvious is about to go.
I didnt notice any handling problems from my 'defective' shock, and dealer confirmed you wont until they get to a really bad state. I did have the knocking noise as well by the way, gone now though.

Had an MY05 which started developing noises at back from about 13k miles.
Was noticeable when slowing up for junctions and roundabouts and slightly vague and disconnected rear when pressing on across country.
Dealer was excellent and replaced under warranty at 19k. Problem was identified about 15k but it took me ages to schedule.
One of the replacement shocks was replaced again just past 30k.
