Default buying 1997 wrx

buying my first scooby soon.

looking to get a 1997 wrx and want to know if there's anything i should look out for.

I'm a mechanic but only ever worked on one scooby a long time ago so any tips on what to look for would be gratefully recieved

Rocker cover gaskets are known to fail (no big deal), and clutches tend to fail (noticable in the higher gears). Check with the owner that Super Unleaded has been used exclusively in this country. Walk away from any cars that smoke or knock from the bottom end. Boost should read at about 1.0 bar (check the FAQ for exact figures).. Hope that helps and welcome to the fold...

i've also heard that they can suffer from gearbox and diff problems now and again. what sort of symptoms do they produce?

Yeah, but only after tuning the engine for alot more power than standard... Generally, the boxes and diffs are fine on standard cars, as long as you keep an eye on fluid changes. Synchro can go, but you'd easily notice that on a test drive.
