Default Another Noob ansking silly questions reg Scooby sports

My turn, basically im getting about 3.5 grand back pay.

Now i have gone through the whole boyracer phase a long time ago, but still love the classic scooby.

Not looking for a turbo just a 2.0 sport will do, as there is less to go wrong, better insurance and fuel economy.

From what i have seen i could pick up a 99 AWD 2.0 Sport with FSH and anything between 60-120k on the clock.

After poking around i have seen a few forums with things to look out for, though these are in relation to turbos, but im sure could still pose a problem down the road..

Big service at 90k Cambelt etc
Expansion bottle for white\grey gunk (leaking oil\water)
Leaking rocker cover gasket
Leaking front crank seal
Leaking header tank
Water in boot, due to spoiler brake light

General signs of overspray, FSH and reciepts (any car really)

Is the sport under powered?

So what im asking is is there anything else to look for, any ideas, is this teh right sensible thing to do.. ????

Think carefully before choosing the Sport. The Turbo models are very reliable indeed. For the money you are talking you could pick up a very good WRX. I am 31 and found insurance for £550 per year after a lot of shopping and bargaining.

Thers's nothing 'so bad' with the sport. I just know that if it were me and I'd bought a Sport it wouldn't be long until I'd be wishing that I had got a UK Turbo, WRX or STI. The post 95 cars are not as thirsty as you'd think. Whilst off boost they are not so bad. I drive from Stoke-on-Trent to Bristol quite often, around 150miles, cost's me bout £30 in juice.

Sports are good cars, IMO, but then i am biased, lol

Check out my car

Also, look here

.:ImprezaSport.net:.

Top forum, loads of members, all nice guys.

I have had my Sport now for over 6 months and i am not regretting buying it, or wanting a turbo. I am happy with the performance i get from it (and before anyone says it, i have been in plenty of turbos, so i do appreciate the difference) i am just not bothered about speeding around everywhere. it was the looks i went for more than anything.

You can get the lovely flat four burble too, with the right mods. But all that is easily found out over on the sport forum

HTH

Nothing wrong with the sport but it can be just as thirsty as a turbo when pushed.
I've managed Poole to Gatwick and back (250miles) on £40 (mixture of 60-65mph to a couple of moments of 'ahem' speeds)

Its a very nice car matey but look what you have done. You've spent all your money making it look like a Turbo. Why not just buy a Turbo, would have probably been cheaper.

No mate.

I havent spent that much at all (lol, and i wonder why you think i have spent ALL my money on it, far from it). I wouldnt have been able to pick a Turbo up for the money i have spent (Very little) which looks like my car.

PLUS

Insurance is cheaper
Overall running costs are cheaper
Fuel is cheaper (can put 95ron in if there is no 99ron available)

So dont think i have bought a Sport, cos i couldnt afford a Turbo. There is a difference between not being 'able' to afford a Turbo, and not 'wanting' to afford one. And i am not trying to make my car look like a Turbo, if i was i would have put a Turbo bonnet on it, which is not happening.

All in, i have a nice looking car (IMO) which hasnt cost me the earth and doesnt cost me the earth to run either.

Didn't mean to offend you in any way, like I said, 'very nice car matey'.

So never have you thought quietly to yourself, 'wish I'd got the Turbo'?

Your current mods must have been around £2K plus fitting.

Sorry, i did sound a bit aggressive didnt I?

To be honest, at this stage of my life, no. I do one day want to own a Turbo, just for the modding potential more than anything, but i just wanted a scoob and couldnt be arsed with all the issues a Turbo brings with it.

I am more than happy with my motor, how she looks and how she performs. each to thier own i suppose.

I do know what you mean, if you are wanting raw, pin you to the back of your seat power, then a Sport could leave you a bit dissapointed i suppose, especially if you have come from other 200bhp+ motors, but i was after the looks and the sound, which i have both of.

My mods cost about £1200 - ish. Fitting free!! i did some myself and some my Dad, as he has a garage/bodyshop.

Nice car btw (best colour too, lol)

dan83590: Hartsill,
Dannybwoy: nice car

Deep down i would love a turbo, but im not ready for one quite yet. And as im trying (for once) to be sensible, cant justify to myself the extra costs. And for the money im looking at some good example Late 90's R/S/T Reg sports with FSH..

Edit:
The 2 main things for me are the looks and sound, brake neck speeds i can live with out, as long as it can overtake the odd banger that gets in teh way i will be more than happy..

Yeah, mine is a T reg, got if for a good price, FSH, 68K on the clock etc.

Totally standard when i got her

But i suppose i am lucky in that i have a relative who can do some of the stuff which is beyond my capabilities.

But if you search on the internet, Ebay, 'For Sale' sections in here etc you can pick up some bargains for mods, thats all i did.

If you want to get into Scooby ownership and dont want to get a Turbo, i personally think the Sport is a good introduction, but i would say that, lol.

Headers and an Exhaust first on the list then..

That's the one problem with my car, although it is a full stainless, its also a Jap make and has two silencers.

Aftermarket back box and Borla headers,

Gives you all the sound you need (Dugga Dugga)

Sounds just like all my mates Classic Turbos now. After the De Cat it will sound even better.

(Sports come with equal length headers which flatten out the burble, the Borla headers are unegaul length, like what come on Turbos as standard, hence seperating the burble and making it sound like it should, also adds a few ponies, between 7-10, which is good also)

This was one of my most expensive mods, but at £290 it still isnt that expensive.

You do lose a bit of torque though don't you?
Dan which exhaust do you have cos most i've seen don't have 2 silencers (and tbh with noise don't have 1 at all ?

Mine does seem to pull 'much' nicer up through 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and although i havent had it on a Dyno, it feels like the torque has increased along with BHP, but i may be wrong.

My fiance has a Sport also, and she too has a Borla fitted with aftermarket back box and the same happened to hers, increase in pull through bottom 3 gears.

There is an increase in 4th and 5th, but just not as noticeable.

Hi mate, i just sold a nice 2001 Sport to my brother in law for £3,700..
I had it for nearly a year, could get 330 on a tank, was quick enough when required and started every time....
I had an Afterburner Vortex on the back for a while.....It had to go....What a bleeding racket it made...The kids constantly complained about it.
Only other things i put on it was a green filter and newage silver alloys
Sport is a great car....I just always wanted a turbo....

Not a clue who makes the exhaust. Deffo two silencers in it though. I think it may be something to do with noise laws in Japan.
