Default speeding question

i was on my way to hartlepool yesterday going up the a1 i was going below 80 most of the way up , after about a hour or so we noticed a copper pulled over at the side of the road in one of them police bays

i looked down and i was going about 85 i panicked a bit and braked to get my self down , im a bit naive about the ways they can get u for speeding what i want to know is could he have had a camera on his car which would automatically catch me and send me a ticket or would they have had to record my speed then pull me over to issue me it ?

my gf said it was a volvo patrol car and it seemed to have a camera on the wing mirror .
when we saw the car there was a few others in front of me which was going about the same speed if not faster so would that have helped in my favour ?

i know if i speed its my fault if i get caught and wholly accept any punishment , i am honestly a really steady driver and rarelly break the limit its just 4 years ago i got caught in a works van speeding and have a sp60 and 3 points so im naturally worrying as my insurance is getting renewed in may

an additional question how long do the points last on liscence ??

Dont worry, its unlikley you will here anything. You would of been pulled at the time if it was a traffic car/ officer.

Points stay on licence for 4 years, but only count for 3 years for totting up points.

Are you sure about the previous sp60 offence, because it can be taken as a serious traffic offence by some insurance companies. AIUI there isnt such an offence for speeding. See here Endorsement offence codes : Directgov - Motoring

Sp 60 doesnt relate to the speed limit you have broken.

Yes, because lile I said, it is classed as a serious offence by some insurance companies. Write to the dvla and explain that the wrong code has been put on your licence. Your code should of been Sp30 or sp50.

What type of road were you caught on ? EG motorway, or restricted road.

Was this offence dealt by way of fixed penalty or a magistrate court appearance?

When you say "works van", is it classed the same as a car?
