I wiil shortly be buying some 17's.. ! To replace my current 16" Speedlines on my WRX.

What is the best width to go for?

I am planning on going for 7 x 17's, so that I can fit 205, 45, 17"!

I was wondering would it be better to go for 7.5 x 17" and maybe go up a size to 215, 45, 17"! I'm not going bigger for all out grip, as I like the car to slide around a bit, well it'd be a bit boring if it didn't..!

So what do you think?

Has anyone tried both sizes? so that an acurate response can be given!

On one of my early 205 - 1.9's I changed from 185 section tyres to 195's and ruined the the driftability of a very nimble chassis!

Would this apply on a Scoob?

Thanks

James

p.s. Speedlines will be available soon, prob with Toyo's.............!

Cool

Hi James,

I tried both on my old 7.5x17 speedlines.

The 205/45/17 were P-zeros and to be honest, the car seemed to handle better with these on.

The 215/40/17's I tried were Yokohama A520's, they seemed to slide a little more in the wet and they also tended to tramline more, particularly when they started to wear.

It was a long time ago 3yrs+ that I did this, so It's difficult to remember the finer points but I was happier with the 205s on 17's. Having said that I'm now running 215 Pirelli P7000 tyres on 18's and they are much better than the 205 P-zero 17's for outright grip wet or dry, the car feels more stable on motorway bends and the lower 35 profiles make the steering responses very quick. I love them!! I realise I haven't really helped you much, from previous experience on 17's I'd probably stick to 205's. If you're after an excellent tyre you won't find much better than the Pirelli P7000 which is the flagship Pirelli racebred tyre and definately not to be confused with the ****ty P6000 and 5000 series.

I thought the 205 Pirelli pZeros were dreadful no front end grip at all. The sidewalls are very soft which made it feel very understeery. I prefer the 215, I think Toyos are quite driftable.

Good luck!
