Default M4 roadworks cameras

Travelling East on the M4 on Friday evening, dark and pi**ing down.

Didn't even notice the reduced speed limit for the roadworks in between Bristol and Swindon (obviously should have but didn't).

Q: Anyone know if these work at night? Not intentionally speeding, should have noticed the reduced speed limit I know but conditions were awful.

On the way home yesterday Westbound, noticed two lots West and at least one camera East.

Cheers.

p.s. no flames thanks, did a search for this info and can't find it.

There's 2 cameras each way between J18-J19. They're the Monitron version.
Read all about them here. UK Speedtrap Guide. radar detector comparison, compare radar detector, gatso, speeding, speedtrap, gatso camera, blinder, uk speed trap, speed trap uk

One thing I've noticed is that there's only the white painted lines they use to confirm your speed, in lanes 2 and 3 and not lane 1.

I can't believe I missed them on the way up to London, but conditions were dreadful. I think I am screwed, as if they are the Monitron cameras they operate at night. Think I remember two flashes in that section also, but as it was dark but with a lot of traffic hard to tell. Argghhhhh!! Had a clean licence for a while now - I expect the worst

I've been through these roadworks a few times, and there is one thing that has particularly struck me, which could pretty dangerous.....

...there is no advanced warning of the 50mph speed limit!

Normally, on approaching motorway roadworks, there's the 3/4 mile advanced warning of the reduced 50mph limit. I'm pretty sure that there is no advance warning for these roadworks, and therefore when the big 50mph signs appear, everyone stamps on their brakes!

Not sure if there's any legal implications from this (and things may have changed), but it doesn't seem the best way to keep traffic flowing smoothly......

Well I am cacking it now. My own blinking fault I know, no excuse to blame the conditions but I can't remember any signs either.

Hi,

If there are no signs to warn you of the limit you will likely be able to argue it and get away with it if its a first time offence (by that i mean you dont try the same excuse every other week lol). Also if the conditions were mega bad you might be lucky enough to have enough spray that the camera picture will be bad enough to not identify you.

Good luck anyway with whatever happens...

I travel up to Swindon a fare bit, I've noticed that some of these camera's have a sat dish attached but others don't.

They do have signs up advising of speed limits and to be honest it should be pretty obvious there is going to be a speed limit.

Roadworks = at least a 50 speed limit more than likey a 40 now

Yes they do work at night, some numpty in a van with irish plates went screaming past me the other day followed by two flashes.

What gets my goat is the miles of 40 limits!! yet you have a look and no one seems to be working in coned of areas!!!

Don't worry about it STix, unless you were way over the 50mph limit? If u were doing 76mph or more you're looking at a summons in the post and 5-6 points + largish fine by return, if you're lucky

This is very unlike me. I'm not a huge speeder at all, on the m'way I normally do about 80 which my Cyclops GPS tells me is about 75 - unlikely to be done for that. The Cyclops is not upto date, as its just recently run out and I couldn't update the subscription through their website. Hence around those roadworks it was giving me incorrect placements for the cameras - could be an expensive mistake not perservering with updating it.

It was a combination of rain, dark and talking to my mate who I was giving a lift to. I have no idea how fast I went through that stretch, but only that I didn't see either camera. Can't believe it.

Dannyboy - I'm normally like you, 'look at that numpty' but in this case its me

Bioforger - I don't think I would have been doing over 76 but again I don't really know

I'll let you know the bad news.

Where exactly are these?

I was making brisk progress WEST bound down to Chippenham from London on Friday night - conscious of some evidence of recent speed restrictions around Swindon e.g. extra fold out Gatso signs, but nothing else.

Isn't J19-18 - Bristol M32 to Bath?

On the way back home Sunday I noticed only one set going east (that I completely missed in the dark/rain Friday night), but apparently there are two.

Westbound there were two sets. Nice and easy to spot in the light

Well I hope I am not tempting fate, but its been two weeks yesterday since I drove to London and missed the two sets of temporary Gatsos on the M4.

No fine, unless its in the post sent yesterday - 14 days NIP I do believe.

I can only think that I slowed down enough, even though I didn't see the cameras at all due to conditions.

I consider myself lucky, and yesterday paid for three years subscription to Cyclops for 79 quid - updating the unit as I type!

Moral of the story, update your GPS camera detector and keep your wits especially in crap conditions

I know it's late for this thread so apologies. But these are conventional flash units rather than infra red. You may have driven through oblivious of the cameras but if you'd triggered them there would have been two mega flashes going off behind you. If you're worried that you might have set the flashes off but not noticed them then for all of our sakes I think you should park your car and walk in future

I think he's saying that if you don't notice two big flashes going off right behind you in the dark, that Joe Public would be safer without you driving on the highway (or pavement).

I did see a couple of flashes, but they were not 'mega' as you say.

As I have never been flashed before, I wasn't sure how 'mega' they would be.

So thanks for your concerns, but I'll continue driving at least for a little while

I presume the flashes I saw were someone else being flashed behind me.
