Default spare wheel question - what if

this might sound strange but i'll ask anyway. I have 18s on my car and a 16" spare wheel in the boot. Would the car drive properly if i was to have a flat and swap a wheel for the 16?

if by properly you mean tearing it around corners and racing Evos....NO

If you mean 50mph max. for a limited distance..should be fine

Really need the rolling radius to be close or it will wind up the transmission.

It should be as the tyre on the spare will have a greater profile. But this is one of the reasons for the 50mph limit. If you've fitted bigger brakes behind your 18s then your stuffed.

Not necessarily - If you have a blow out on a front tyre then you just swap a rear wheel on to the front, and stick the space saver on the back.... unless you also have monster rear brakes too!!

Do as i did http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...r/021bf7fd.jpg werent about to take chances ******* anything up and hate the look of spacesavers on anyway-ok if you can live with less bootspace i guess, will make a cover for the wheel eventually.

What about the Type R models. They have an adjustable centre diff and also come with a space saver spare wheel. If it wasn't safe to drive with it on surely Subaru wouldn't have put it there

so if i had a flat at the front it would be advisable to put one of the back wheels on it and put the spare 16 at the back?

Only if you have uprated calipers that the 16'' wheel won't go over.

yes, as the front wheels have to cope with most of the braking, along with steering duties as well

bump.

I have changed to 18"s and the spacesaver is 16". Is it worth just ditching the spare and putting a couple of cans of that foam stuff in the boot ?
