Right, a little problem.
My type R has developed a whine in 1st gear. Maybe a bearing or syncro etc on the way out. So, do I .............
A) Get the box overhauled and keep the 5 speed as it is.
B) Get the box overhauled and go for a longer UK 5th gear
C) Go for a 6 speed box
Decissions, decissions?
I'm looking for a motorway 5/6th gear really, so, I suppose B or C, but any opinions out there as to do's or dont's!

If it's only whining in first but otherwise drives OK, I wouldn't worry too much - unless you launch it like a copper after a doughnut truck.
In terms of ratios, go for a V ltd or P1 box as they have a longer 5th.
You've got to be a little careful as dropping the revs too much at higher speeds could leave you with the car being lethargic with large gaps between the gears. MIne feels OK at "higher" speeds but can be a little sluggish to respond in 5th if travelling at less than 80...
What you could do is spec/buy the new box now and swap out the old one. Car's off the road for the minmum time that way.

6 speed is stronger, no question, however as a tradeoff its a fair bit heavier too (40kgs comes to mind but i stand to be corrected) which is a fair bit of weight to add to a car, thats a decent trip to tescos your carrying around permenantly.
Some like the 6 speed ratios, others dont, when mine goes ill be staying 5 speed.

I'm not sure if they're compatible, but a later newage wrx 05> iirc has a stronger 5sp box, you 'may' just find one going cheap from a scrappy, and no bother of changing rear diffs/drive shafts etc of going to a 6sp..?
Just a thought..

I'll be keeping the DCCD, so really, it's either a import STI 7/8, or rebuild my 'box.
I'd be very interested to hear from someone who's done this (6 speed) already.
Keep the suggestions coming.

I personally don't like the 6 speeds....
I have the "odd" burn with Alloy and his is a 6 speed....
and I do enjoy holding the gears tha bit longer as the 6th gear is just for motorway driving....and as we know, scoobies have all the aero's of a brick......so who wanta a great top-end?
