Doesn't sound too bad - the Scooby Clinic show £395 fitted for a Standard clutch + £320 for a flywheel + VAT which is £840. More for uprated clutches...

What is your milegae? I've done 61.5K and am having a problem getting 1st sometimes and think it's probably the clutch.

How can you not know that? Id keep such ignorance to myself if I were you. Youll be telling me next that you can hear high-rev/high-boost detonation; does it all sound like an old Cortina pinking Pete?

Many places do exchange flywheels, they keep your old one and fit a refurbed (and often lightened) flywheel. Usually in the region of £100 afaik.

The cost of flywheels vary, they can go from (RRP) £140.00 up to £460!!

One of those is for an MY03 STI, the other a MY00 normally aspirated Legacy

The cheaper one belongs to the MY03 STI

Its not reccomended to replace the clutch without the flywheel, it could create judder and result in another clutch replacement, costing the customer alot more money in the long run

Only with the Impreza have I ever heard of replacing the flywheel when you replace the clutch!
Considering that new Imprezas suffer from clutch judder, I can't see the point of replacing a 12KG piece of steel in a hope of solving the issue. It has never bothered me anyway, it just means that you need to get the revs right!
Having it re'skimmed... yes. Replace.....no way!

Its with all Subaru models, not just the Impreza where the flywheel is also replaced.

Even when a clutch is claimed for under warranty, the flywheel is replaced as reccomended by International Motors.

First time I've heard "all new Imprezas suffer from clutch judder"

This is news to me too! The only reason to replace the flywheel would be if for some reason it was causing damage to the clutch. In any case a light skim would be all that was required. While clutch is being replaced is obviously a good time to have a lighter weight flywheel put in ( only should you choose to do so )for the modest performance benefit it provides.

Funny that. Nothing to do with the fact that they are after more of your readiess! A flywheel needs skimming, not replacing. It's a 12KG piece of iron for god sake!

You really are a prize ****!

As an Engineer I simply CANNOT see any reason WHATSOEVER for replacing a flywheel when the clutch is replaced!!

Maybe, Mr SmartArse, you could enlighten me??

It should be resurfaced ... but, unless teeth are missing, no need to replace!

As most have said above. Skim the flywheel, but to replace, I think not!

I repeat, for the hard of understanding ( GC8 ) EXPLAIN, please, WHY a flywheel should be replaced everytime when a clutch is replaced rather than the very much cheaper option of re-surfacing/skimming?

I await your answer with baited breath .....................

As I understand it, Claire is actually from Prosport...

I know nothing about all this so I'm open to arguements from both sides but I would have thought she does know what she's talking about.

recently had a new clutch put into my 04 wrx sti.

Excedy organic clutch - £335 incl VAT and delivery (aps)
Fitting - £250 incl VAT
Fly wheel - No need to replace as there were no surface/abrassive cracks.

Total £585

Great clutch!

Will Claire and Prosport benefit financially from the advice to buy a new Flywheel?

Will we benefit financially from the advice to Skim the exsisting Flywheel?

It's the old mechanic trick, 'while you are there you may as well replace...'

Some of them can be skimmed, it just depends on how bad they are, but even then its not guaranteed.
