The S4 has had mixed write ups. It's about as fast as a Standard UK Impreza, but with a lot more refinement and a much better interior. The main points against it were that it has no driver involvement at all and very little character.
Driver not invited, was one comment that I think autocar said.
Depends on what you want. For an autobahn/mway crusier they are nice cars, BUT as a car to have fun in probably not your best bet.

I had one, was a good car but not a clear impreza rival. Leant itself more to driving lazily. Very nice inside, though standard seats unsupportive - go for recaros (which are not a retrofit option). Pertol is easily as bad as scoob as well (another max 300 mile range tank)
Ran into problems with 2 dealers, local to me, supremely arrogant SOB's IMHO. They'd assume you know squat and fleece you...I did find 1 decent one - Batersea branch...they'll fleece you, but do it nicely. Ultimately the dealer experiences I had forced me into swapping the S4 for a second Scoob .

I had one as well. Didnt have the dealer problems Chucks had though.
Chuck is right about the seats. I had the Recaros in mine, but most were fitted to the later cars.
The car is a quick car, and some of the magazine tests dont do the performance justice. The extra cc make for a very torquey motor. Number of times in 6th I thought I was in 4th it pulled that well.
If you care about the driving experience, you need to budget for some mods. Better suspension - HR Coilovers or springs at the very least, UUC shortshifter and of course a chip. With the chip the car will be as quick as any STI or EVO VII. Audi driver timed the car to 100 in just over 11 secs. However there is some concern over the reliability of the turbos, chipped or not.

I heard that if the turbo fails, you need to replace both turbos at the same time as tehy are matched, and that it's an engine out job!! I hope that's not true. These are on my potential shopping list too, but I can't find one under 50,000 mls.
