They used to be, up until about two years ago but they're not currently illegal.

BUT they may well be in the near future if the government gets its way.

Andy.

Cool

Yeah they r legal 4 now although in real terms they aint that good! They tell u there's a working fixed camera when yer nearly sitting on it & as 4 hand held radar gun things by the time it goes off it's too late as the copper already has wo speed yer doing so in my opinion just a waste of cash but that's just my opinion

I believe that Andy is right. They are currently legal but the law may soon be tightened.

Si is correct in saying that detectors are not very useful (don't detect Truvelo and SPECS and are very prone to false alarms). The alternative is a Geodesy from Morpheous which informs you of all fixed speed cameras and will be much harder to legislate against as it does not detect anything. Couple that with a Laser jammer for the mobile units on motorway bridges and all you have to worry about are the VASCAR patrols!

Of course all of this would be unnecessary if speeding were policed sensibly i.e. zero tollerance in 30's and 40's, some leeway on A roads and derestricted motorways...

GPS warning is best but my detector gives plenty of warning of a fixed GATSO and contrary to the antispeed propoganda there is scatter from a laser gun and my record so far is a warning at over 1/2 mile when the *operator* was hiding behind a utility company van.

As I was doing daft speed at the time it paid for itself there and then. Just IMHO of coure

Check out this page... http://www.roads.dtlr.gov.uk/consult/speed/index.htm

This is where the Government posts its proposed road vehicle legislation - in this case concerning radar detectors and jammers. Fines look a little steep too £60 fixed penalty up to £5000 (if it goes to court)

It looks like this is still at the consultation stage (although date for comment has long passed). I get advance info on this kind of thing at work so I'll do a little digging and keep you posted...

Don't get me wrong i'm not totally against the idea of knowing where the ole speed detectors r placed & the GPS type jobbers can b relatively handy although they do require up2 date info on just where cameras r placed, which obviously doesn't guarantee a 100% success rate. Can't remember which system it was but that can also give advantages as u can press this button on yer box if u pass a device it hasn't warned u about 4 which they give u a reward, can't remember the specifics, soz I fort there were supposed 2 make sure cameras weren't hidden anyway or is that just these new digital jobbers?
At the current time it's still that in my humble opinion yer best saving the cash u may have spent on these funky bits of kit for the speeding ticketsThere was this site that used 2 have where speed camera was n all but guess wot i can't remember where it was now, im not being very helpful now am i?lol
