Default First scooby, test drove today...

Hi all,

I've been on these forums for a few weeks now browsing lots of scooby advice, researching what car suits me and even having a laugh on this great community

I have finally set myself on a 03 blobeye wrx sti in blue and it drove superbly
I've so many question to ask cos as I said i'm new to scooby's one of them is a red light was on constantly above the sti symbol on the rev meter is this normal? Also, the turbo didnt seem to whine just 'woosh' if that at all makes sense just didn't sound as I expected and finally the exhaust seemed to be really quiet (the car is totally standard) but I thought an sti would 'burble' alot more than it did - could this be down to it being stood in the showroom behind other cars?
Finally, does it come with locking wheel nuts as standard?

All in all though, was very impressed, and I can't wait to bring it home with me in a few days

The red light you mention is the shift light you can set it to come on at any revs you want with the button on the left hand side of the instrument cluster and yes the sti is relevantly quiet with the standard exhaust on just change it to something else like i did and the turbo should have had a whisstle with it at least when it was boosting up but other than that you could put a ppp on it to get a bit more of a rumble depending if it has a warrenty with it of course. just enjoy

As above.
I suggest if the budget allows (and if under warranty) getting ppp fitted.
Had it fitted to my STI two weeks ago and it makes the car even better.
Not sure about the whoosh though if the car is standard or has it got an after market dump valve fitted.
UK cars do come with locking nuts so make sure the master is in the glove box or boot.

Enjoy
Nik.

Wow that's really good, so you can change it depending on what the car's peak rpm is? I believe the standard sti peak is 6,500rpm is that right? Going back to a previous question, do the wheels come with locking wheel nuts as standard? I will most probably upgrade the exhaust as it's certainly quick enough for me, any idea how much that will be? And yeh, it comes with a 1yr warrenty from the garage i'm buying it from, it's over due it's 30k mile service by 1k is that anything to be worried about?

Sry bout all the questions, but i'm just finding out as much info as poss about the car - do you like the pics btw?

Cheers.

I haven't got an STi but AFAIK the red light is a gear shift indicator light telling you when to change gear. The exhaust in standard form doesn't make a huge noise but a different backbox etc would bring out the 'flat four burble' more. The turbos are often described as sounding like a jet engine when on song. As your car is standard these noises will be fairly muted but easily brought out if you so wish.

Cheers Barney

Get the garage to do a full 30k service as this costs around 400 quid
This includes most fluids including diff oil.

Never heard it called those names before. Somebody refered to the Blob (most commonly known name) as an angel eye once.
Where does Blobeye actually come from

Already done mate Got them to bring the price down by a few hundred too got a 12 month warrenty and full service all included in the price I think i've deffo made the right decision paying the extra for an sti over a wrx, I don't really wanna spend another £2k on the pp though, but I do want to have a bigger louder exhaust and rally graphics done any idea how much a decent sounding exhaust would be and where I should get it fitted?

Cheers.

Are you buying from a main dealer out of interest.
If its under a pucker Subaru warranty i think your choice of exhausts will be limited to prodrive or WR Sport examples as others will invalidate your Subaru warranty.
I bought a WRX and it lasted 9 months before i chopped it in for the STI, bit costly but it had to be done

Lovely looking car, it looks identical to my new one that I picked up yesterday! Peeps already answered your questions, so good stuff.

Forget the graphics and a drain pipe though! Just my opinion though as I love the completely standard look.

Enjoy it, it's a jet engine!

I'm not buying from a main dealer, but a very good local garage that's been running for over 50 years I did mention the exhaust he said it should be ok i'll have to clarify that when I pick up the car that it won't invalidate the warrenty.

Going back to one of the original questions, do the sti 17" gold alloys come with locking wheel nuts? Didn't think to ask/check when I was there earlier today.

I have just bought a 2004 WRX STi here in Switzerland, and mine didn't come with locking wheel nuts.

But then this country is so safe, I don't need any.

Thanks mate

It's a 2003, and cost me a little under £14k with 1yr warrenty, 30k full service and full vallet sounded like a good deal to me what do you think?
Only done 30k miles too...

It's immaculate

One thing these cars are prone to failing on are the rear shockers. Check for knocking at the rear when driving. Just had mine replace under warranty (MY03 Car, 13k on the clock).

Another question guys; is there only one level of ppp that you can get that costs £2k? or can you choose a more suttle version for less?

As you dont have the Subaru warranty you can do what you want.
Most independant garage warranties have a relatively small claim limit which on a Subaru will probably get you naff all anyway.
Go for a decat exhaust and remap. Speak to the guys at Scoobyclinic or such like and they will give you some options.
One piece of advise would be not to use cowboys, cheap is not always best.
Respect the car and it won't let you down.

as far as i know there is just one upgrade best bet would be a new exhaust fuel pump and panel filter and a remap be less than 2k

Thanks mate,

Indeed what your saying makes sense - I want a louder exhaust but not a decat as I don't want the hassle of changing it over when it comes to the m.o.t is it possible to have a nice sounding exhaust without the decat?
I am going to speak to scoobyclinic as soon as I get the car, good shout man...

Cheers all, you are great
