Noticed at my local Esso station today that LRP is 3p per litre cheaper than SUL. Now I was under the impression that LRP is simply SUL with some additional additives, so the fact that it was cheaper didn't seem to make sense?

I asked the guy behind the counter about the price difference. His reply was that <I>"SUL is higher octane than LRP. SUL is 98 and LRP is 97."</I> Now this is hopefully NOT the case as SUL is marked as 97 RON on the pumps. He then said that <I>"SUL is mainly for Jags"</I> and finished of (after glancing at my car in the forecourt) that I'd <I>"be better running mine on alcohol or methanol"</I> ... no thanks!

Hmm. Still doesn't answer the question of why SUL users must pay more for less, or is the taxation level different?

Anyone got any suggestions?

LRP is basically a crap fuel and is made from whatever is available at the refinery at any given time at the lowest cost, with the addition of sodium based compounds. It has no BS number and varies hugely in quality, even from the same retailer/refiner. SUL is a BS marked fuel and quality does not (or should not) vary at all. You are paying for this quality assurance.
