Default 330/340bhp newage, Are you happy with yours?

Hey guys

Im due to have my car mapped soon and ive been driving myself mad with mods etc recently.

If i have just a full exhaust, fuel pump and panel filter ive been told i should be around 330/340bhp.

Are you happy with yours, is there anything you wish you did different before mapping?

Bottom line is im a bit worried that im still gonna think its slow

Thanks for your time.

We allways think they slow when you get used to the power , Then spend more to get more power , Then you spend more ??? But its good fun,

Previous car was a 350bhp 4x4 cossie....

STIs like a 1.1 fiesta in comparison, feels gutless even though ive decatted it

Assuming it's a new age STi - who said you should have 330/340 without the re-map? You should get close to those figures WITH mapping.
I've recently had my STi PPP re-mapped by TSL (Richard Bulmer) and it's a great improvement but I'll resist guessing bhp and torque until a RR session comes along.
In terms of your Cossie - my son had a 4x4 Sapphire with 300bhp and a higher lbft torque figure (Power Engineering) and in top gear would leave a Scoob dead. If it's torque you want get an EVO or go back to the Cossie! He's had STiPPP but now has an EVO IX 320- now that's quick!

I've managed 340bhp with 305 lbft an the difference was startling at first.....
You can really notice the torque with that constant feeling of being pushed into the back seat but after a few months you get used to it and you start thinking,"is there something wrong with it??"

But thats the tuning bug.....

I'm glad i'm not alone with the feeling that the car is slower or something is wrong with it !, mine is a MY03 STI with PPP, which produced 309 bhp on the RR.

I want to do the WRC-tech package as it massively increases torque as well as bhp, but need to get the front brakes done first !

It would be good to feel as though the car is pulling when in 4th & 5th.

4th gear for me is a no go as it made ++++ mph when mapping......but the pull is crazy.....

I'd be carefull of rr's though as I got mine rr before it was mapped and it was 271....then when I stuck it on another set of rr BEFORE IT WAS MAPPED it produced 319 out the blocks.....

The trouble with ex-cossie owners is that they are only bothered in straight line power and big bhp figures..... I know, I used to be one!

A newage UK STI with PPP, uprated anti-roll bars, solid drop links, anti-lift kit, geometry setup and decent suspension is very quick. Ok... perhaps not straight line quick, but around B roads and through the twisties they can be.

People look at increasing BHP, more than setting the car up correctly and learning how to drive it first.

My advice and if you have the money..... get the above handling mods done at the same time and your car WILL BE transformed.

Regards,
Shaun.

sti8 with 350/345 here, and very happy Just need to sort the suspension out now, with ast's, and I'll be a pig in s*** happy

As simon says, get handling and driver training before or at the same time to reap the full benefits of your power upgrades

You'll always want more.

350bhp is MORE than adequate for the road. A car with this power output of a Scoobies weight will offer serious performance. There comes a point where the law of diminishing returns starts to come into effect for road use.

I have a STI8 with full decat full custom zorst fuel pump STI panel filter and a remapped @ prosport by Richard Bulmer and Pete who owns Prosport and come out with 343bhp and 339lbft.

I had the work done 3 months ago and it is still making me smile.

I have a mate who has an STI9 and he also still owns a 400bhp cossie and he say my scoob is well quicker and the power delivery is mentel.

BIG SMILES FROM.

It all depends who maps the car for you i think.

There had mine running at 360bhp but brought it back as i use the car everyday and i need to get some fuel economy out of it.

Get it done but make sure you trust the mapper.

356bhp 333ftlbs here and i am really pleased with how the car feels and drives on the road. Just had a new clutch and a 4.6kilo flywheel, by far the best mod i've done! The responsiveness and pick up is so vastly improved it really has confirmed that it is the most fun you can have with your cloths on

A remap alone will make the car much more driveable and fun, so get on with the mods and open yourself to a world of entertainment

Only 265PS from my 03 WRX PPP, but stays glued to the @r$es of many much more powerful cars. A combination of a well set up car (AST's, Whiteline goodies and a geo set-up by the guy that does Williams F1 cars ) and a quite well trained driver. I can only echo what Shaun said about having the car set up correctly, as power is nothing without control (cliché ) as I proved on a Dales run when a 420bhp classic couldn't keep up.

Yes Chris, you can have my AST's if my car doesn't sell soon

Well said, mine has had £££££££spent on engine mods (330bhp) but has also had 18's with Toyo Proxys fitted, prodrive springs, fron & rear strut braces and a fast road geometry set up. Straight line speed is good but it is safer if it handles properly as well,

John D, i was meaning with mapping too mate, sorry.

Dont get me wrong guys, it handles, ive done the brakes with a full tar ox setup, ive got a whiteline adj rear ARB, uprated mounts and billet droplinks on their way.

I plan to lower it although only on prodrive springs, get an Anti lift kit and a geometry setup.

I know the cars performance is about how it handles, my cossie was a 4x4, on Koni adjustables, strutbraces and fully polybushed. It handled REALLY well.

Ive watched track prepped 1600cc fiestas whip 400bhp cossies around a track and i know thw value of a propper handling and well setup car.

But im not talking about handling so much here, im more refering to the excitement of the car. I just dont find it exciting to drive.

The cossie was brutal in every gear, 100mph on full boost would pin you to the seat!!

The scoob feels just so boringly slow

Frayz,
I moved from a 500bhp RS500 to a UK STi to what I have now. Ok, I fully appreciate it is a different car than what you have (mine is a Spec C) and has more power than what you are suggesting (360bhp ish), but it leaves my RS500 for dust in normal road driving.

Even a previous Escort Cossie I had with 340bhp/350lbft felt underwhelming compared to this car.

I'm sure a well setup UK Newage, would not be that far behind me.

Hol,
It's a long and painful process.....

But just a quick update:

1)The first hybrid twin scroll turbo is now on the car and over the next couple of weeks we will find out how this baby responds to a decent map and inlet mods (initial indications/tests are promising).

2)Competition 3 way adjustable, remote reservior shocks have just been fitted (gotta get that handling pin sharp!).

3)Header modification testing is also planned for early May.

I am afraid due to time constraints I doubt very much if this stage will be completed prior to ScoobyNet Live / ScoobyShootOut (which was the original finish timescale for Stage 2 Engine Mod's). But it will provide a good shakedown (especially for the handling circuit), and work will continue with further turbo's and looking at intercooling to complete this stage thereafter.

Regards,
Shaun.

My '02 WRX is setting at 335hp/310lbft now but should be about 380hp in a few weeks... after that, I am done...... hmm that sounds familiar..... didn't I say that when I hit 280, 305 and then 335.....

Im probably gonna go to either Pat Herbourn @ Xtreme scoobies/Scooby clinic or to the guys at TSL.

What are you opinions on these guys, at the moment its swaying towards TSL

wrx guys, what turbos are you using and how did you get the torque low down? I need a turbo change for more power but am worried about more lag.

When you say it pulls from low down how low are we talking?

Currently at 280/280 on an my03 with sti PPP downpipe center and a H+S up-pipe. Turbo, injectors etc etc is on the cards next.

Anything above 330 would be good, preferably a bit more but low down response is more important as I find it lags on some slow second gear corners near me but going for first is hard work.

I would rather have good response than huge power but I can't afford this.http://www.motorsportpartnership.com...3634&item=1266

What sort of low down torque is possible?
