Default Paying for a private car.

Hi.
Hoping to look at a new car at the weekend, its a fair distance to travel.
Im pretty sure that if i dont find any faults the seller hasnt already mentioned that im likley to want to buy it.
What is the best way to arrange payment, is it possible to both go to the bank and directly transfer the money or get a bankers draft their and then.
If i decide i want the car i would like to drive it home there and then and to hand over the money without having to wait a week or so for it to clear....

Any help on this matter?

You can go to the bank and get a bank transfer there and then. The only thing is it doesn't enter the other bank till the end of the days trading, so its up to the current owner if he is happy with that. It cost you £25 to do it (normally)

Waving pound notes under a seller's nose is a good bargaining tool

i wouldn't want to accept over £3000 in cash again. nothing happened, i just didn't like it much, kept thinking i'd get followed and the cash nicked back.

i'd NEVER sell a scoob and accept cash.

take a day off in the week, i'm sure he'd do the same to sell his car to a serious buyer & do the bankers draft thing

Thats because you come from up north ......

we are much more friendly and trustworthy down south.

Point to note, anything above Newbury is North for me, habited by northern monkeys

This place never ceases to amaze me, paranoia about filling oil filters before fitment and now most of you seem to be scared of cash too?

What's the problem?? I've sold loads of cars for pretty serious amounts of cash, and the only think that worries me is it burning a hole in my pocket

Plus cash is the best bargaining tool when it comes to buying a car, you really find out how desperate someone is to sell the car (also a good way of finding out if its a lemon)..

Friends of ours went to Leeds with cash to pay for a car they veiwed and were mugged at gun point. Gun fired and shattered glass and friends eneded up in hospital.

Money gone, car gone....you may have read it or listened to it on Granada Reports about 2 mths ago!

Nuff said about cash I say

Good luck in your purchase...and safe driving...

Could not agree more
Good God - i am sure we all have heard of bad things happening or but life has to go on otherwise we would never set foot outside again.
Get some pertspective - i know of one person who was attacked over a year ago. I also know a lot of others who have not been.

It's about 15 yrs ago now but a bloke came to buy one of my cars carrying a sports bag. Asked for a test drive so we went out for 1/2 an hour. He left the bag on the driveway.

You guessed it, £2,500 cash in the bag Paid for the car when we got back from the test drive, I was totally gobsmacked, why the fek didnt he put it in the car?

Anyway, this was up noorf, so he must have been originally from daarn saaf

Hi Crazyman 1979 (I always think a first name is better, maybe that is your name ?),

If it's my silver wrx off ebay I would prefer bankers draft !!!

Notes are so easy to forge these days, the wife worked in a bank and could spot them, but when she quizzed me with them, I could not tell. If you have a bundle of £5,000 in notes, it would be easy to slip in a few duds.

Having said that, I'm sure it would be easy to forge a bankers draft, so would have to see it banked before I parted with my pride and joy.

Mistrust and paranoia, a funny old thing.

Cheers,
Graeme.

Last time I took 15k cash for my EVO, I went with the customer to my bank and payed it in over the counter. The bank then accept the responsibility for checking the currency is not counterfeit and the customer accepts the responsibility for carrying the cash in his pocket to the bank.

With these sum's of money its the best way to do it.

There is a problem with cash, believe it or not, there are lots of counterfeit notes out there and bank staff (GF inc) are good at spotting them when you pay them in, and they don't let you have them back so you could end up out of pocket.

What's the problem?? I've sold loads of cars for pretty serious amounts of cash, and the only think that worries me is it burning a hole in my pocket

Cheques and Bankers drafts are a DAMN sight easier to counterfeit than a massive pile of cash!

Which is why you let them bring the cash to the bank and let them pay it in to your account. If notes are forgeries, then they loose the money and you don't give them the car.
