How often does the oil need changing. i have never had a impreza before so any advice would be good. What goes wrong on these cars.

just read on hear some are 260 bhp some are 280 bhp how can i check.

Servicing every 7500 miles being a MY99 change the MAF to be on the safe side.
Warm up the engine/oil before booting it and get rid of the dump valve for standard

MY99/00 MAF's are well known weak spots and many treat them as services items. Some info here

Part No 22794AA010, about £75 from your dealer.

Do a search on dump valves, especially VTA's.
Being SN many people hate them and class them as Chav offering no benefit, cause borewash and the standard recirc is good enough etc etc

Each to their own I say(though I do run standard as well)

Usually if your car has an induction kit, it should retain the MAF pipe unless its been remapped using a MAP based ECU such as a GEMS or Motec.
Induction kits are also well known killers of MAF sensors. Had one in my old MY99 Type R and got rid for the standard airbox after killing 2 MAF's with no further MAf issues.

Optimax should be fine alone but if you're worried run some booster such as Nitrous Formula Race(black bottle) or Millers

The phrase 'timebomb' springs to mind

Personally I don't think a used Jap import with undetermined mods and history makes for a very good first Impreza.

If it were me I'd take it to one of the many Specialists mentioned on here, have them give it a good once over and heed the advice that they should give you.

good luck.Jon

Congrats on your purchase.
From MY97 onwards the JDM WRX had at least 280 ps (note ps) tranlates to the region of 276 bhp IIRC (but this would be on Jap fuel)

HKS exhaust - nice

You say 76k - what miles or kilometres. If now in miles, would have been converted at some stage.
Anyway , it should have recently had a full service at around 75k
The biggy service is at 90k - cambelt , all fluids etc

Cant quite understand what your saying about induction here !!!

I havent had an MY99, but also understand the MAFs do not like induction kits very much on this model...and so as advised, change the sensor...and take off induction kit and put back to standard; with an STi panel filter.

You should be ok with optimax - but depends a bit on driving style, if you tend to be heavy right footed more often than not..then add some booster, especially in summer months.
Tip :
If stuck in traffic for a while on warm/hot days..do not boot it to show how fast you can go when traffic eases....give it a minute or 2 for induction air temps to lower due to heat soak before planting the right foot

You dont know really how its been treated in past life.. you can only treat it
as you think best from now.

if there are no bills, or no local specialist can vouch for it, best is to pressme it has not been done and then get it done asap. again, cold save you thousands and you will then have piece of mind that its been done

how long has is been in the country, and what kind of service history does it have.

i think i payed aroung £250 @ at local garage when i had my classic (pennine way) dont think its something that can be checked on the car, unless its been recorded at a garage or on trustworthy history. i would er on the side of caution and change it

buy if from the dealer.

as for his mate saying that, to be fair, he wasnt going to tell you it needed doing mate.

if your getting it fitted, make sure that they have done one before, boxer engine belts, from what i believe are not the easiest belts to change

you pays your money, you takes your chance
