Camshaft replacement 2003 wrx PPP
Hi,
OK,here we go and i would love to hear comments or similar TRADEGYS!
I have a 2003 wrx c/w PPP fitted and prodrive disks and sti panel filter.30k mileage.
Recently i heard a disturbing knocking IN the engine. Now i know bad noises and good and this was bad....so after being turned away from a new franchised subaru dealer in Bournemouth (they didnt have tech knowledge) i went to Sparshatts in SOTON.
After a week they have told me the camshaft needed replacing and engine was now being re-built!!!!! Question? The car has FSSH and oil topped up regularly ( mobil 1) never tracked it but i do drive it hard. The warranty claim has been accepted and all costs covered, but how can such a cruical component fail and is this a common thing on these scoobys ?
Seems scary that this can happen and im lucky i noticed the knock just before the warranty runs out...how much do you think this would be costing? any ideas ?and is this the last of my troubles ? im known for being unlucky but judging by what ive read in the forums imsure this must be unique.
Please let me know your feelings/experiences as i want to continue to own a scooby but am now worried...my previous golf gti mk2 had 120k on it when i sold it and no major probs...except 2nd gear....
Look forward to replys and any advice...is it my fault? am i doing something wrong ?

LOL...yes sums it up i guess but im used to bad luck....and to ask about the warm/cool up period the answers RELIGIOUSLY......i have never ever driven a car hard from cold and all turbos ive driven regardless of fuel gets the same treatment.....As a sub note id like to add that the impreza wagon they have loaned me with (10 miles on the clock new new style)has trouble starting in the morning and when reversing out of the drive the brakes ( i presume) bind causing either a stall or over rev to move it...me?
Dean, most of the loacls from the bournemout area don't know who the new dealer is... do tell!!!

Thanks for the welcome Ron,linked to the local sites and cant wait for the first meet...
The local dealership is of course OLYMPIAN SUBARU, from day one ive been dissapointed by the service (apart from the actual guy doing the work who i spoke to) After spending up to 3k with them for fitting PPP and disks and pads plus servicing intervals they turned round and told me that they heard the knocking but had to wait for a SPECIALISTS to advise or visit them to let them know what the problem was,and anyway they were having problems getting parts from Subaru at the moment (looks like they were on stop with there account) so go to someone else !!!!!!!!!!! Im worried that the work theve carried out is ok now...seems to me they have bitten off more than they can chew, its not a Renault or an other which is there main manufacturer... so i can only say...AVOID. It saddens me to say it but sh*t ive spent money i can ill afford with them..

Olympian have been the local dealer for a while, althought they are now NOT selling new cars... they are only able to service and supply parts..... we don't know who the dealership is going to.... i suspect Westover may get it.. but that is purely a guess....... if you need anything else done, it's worth considering Triton In the industrial bit at Hurn......

K, well they seemed very new to the whole game to me,Triton im very aware of and have been there several times in recent weeks dropping off my friend to have work carried out on his classic.
They have been TOP NOTCH and his cars perfect, they even spend time explaining whats been done and even showing the parts taken off...my type of place.
Only reason not used yet (i live close to them) is worried about warranty? could they of sorted current problem ? if so bloody double kick to me...
thanks Ron for comments and look forward to meeting the man from deepest darkest dorset (or was it corset? te he)

I have an 03WRX and mine sounds very growly on start up for the first 2 or 3 secs and I started to notice it at around 8k and it as now done 24k. I asked the ususal questions on scooby net and the general feedback was that a lot of 03's sounded the same. Was the case with your scooby?
P.S i have had it back to the dealership but its one of those noises that only happens first start in the morning so if you miss it you have to wait a full day and hence the Dealer never heard it.

At a guess, I think you might mean crankshaft, not camshaft??
I've never heard a camshaft fail on a Scoob, plus they don't knock...and there's 4 of them. Where scoobs are more prone to chew up their cranks when the bearings fail...and boy do they knock

It shouldn't happen and definetly not at 30k.
Although it was much more common on older models with more miles. Where there was always a good debate on the definitive causes (as there is no exact singular cause).
