Post De-Tangoing a bugeye?

Hi. I've finally improved the front of my MY02 bugeye. Fitted a Prodrive front splitter, JDM fog light covers and a JDM grille conversion. The last bit are the lights. I was going to change them to STi's but are hard to find or too expensive and have gone off the idea of morettes. Anyone have any step by step pics? I've taken the headlamp out but too scared to put it in the oven or knowing what screws to take out. Any help would be great. Even better anyone confident in doing them for me in Kent or Essex for a price?

I know some on here have just broken up the orange bit with a pair of long nosed pliers, and then tipped it all out of the hole. no need to cook the lights.

If you do decide to cook though then here's the recipe. Bug eye rather than blob eye but I'm sure the principle's the same.

Paul,

The blobeye has the orange lens which requires to be removed, but afaik, the bugeye simply has a huge orange indicator bulb which can be swapped for a silvertech one.

did mine a bit ago (Bugeye), very easy job. i didnt have the ***** to put the h/l assembly in the oven so i used a small hot air heater which did the job perfectly.once the screws have been taken out and adhesive has softened the 2 parts just require prizing apart, the only problem that i came across was after refitting the h/l misted up which pissed me off as i carried out the procedure again in order to dry the inside of the lense. all sorted and now looks miles better. if it all goes wrong not to worry perfect excuse to buy h/l conversion. good luck.

Just finished doing mine. What a nightmare!! I didn't heat mine up I just got some pinch nose pliers and kept picking a away at the orange bit. Finally done them after 3 hours. Look brilliant though

I now need some advice on bulbs. Apparently the silver ones are really dull even if you get decent ones so i'm thinking of LED ones with resistors. Anyone tried this on a bugeye. Are the front bulds offset pins on opposite?

Why would anyone want to change the look of a bugeye, it's such a pretty car

probably the same reason as most other scooby owners change/modify the looks of their car.

As been said earlier, the orange bits can be easily broke up with long nose pliers, did it on mine, no need for baking

You need to lift them upwards then the bottom should come out. Get your fingers underneath and pull upwards. Might hurt your fingers. Depends how much of a wuss you are.

use a credit card, inserting it at the front end behind top of refector at a slight angle pointing down(got that, probably not) anyway by pushing the credit card in, it will push in a lip that then allows the reflector to be freed. good luck and when their out give the ugly reflectors to your little boy(if you have one) and give him a hammer also . job done

Yeh i changed my side indicators and reflectors to clear the other week on my bugeye,

For removing the reflectors push up and they will eventually pop free, as said i ended up with big thick lines forced into my fingers and being a wuss it was pretty sore!! Worth it though!

I've did them on my bugeye a few months back. You just need a bit of bottle and commitment!

I used a thin flat-head screwdriver, wrapped in a tea towel to avoid scratching the paintwork. Worked a treat!

I'll give that a go rather than taking the whole h/l apart. Cheers

Silvertec Bulbs are fine and are as bright as standards one.

When I first put them in I thought the Silvertec bulbs were a bit lame, I'm not convinced that they are bright enough, remember reading on here that the Philips version are brighter than the Silvertec's, I've since wired clear side markers up as indicators to shead a bit more light..

Yeas i've seen the philips ones on ebay so I might give them a try. Are the bulbs offset or opposite on the fronts i've basically got to take the whole headlamp to check so i'd rather find out now so I can purchase some on ebay.

For the bugeye which has the wedge bulbs then PIAA mirror orange are the boys. Much much brighter than the foliatec ones. Not sure if they do PIAA mirror orange ones for the pin type but if they do then give it a go.

The original orange bulbs have offset pins, the original clear bulbs have in line pins. Silver ones come with either offset pins, to replace orange bulbs in clear indicators, or in line pins if you originally had clear bulbs and orange glass. As the bug eye had a big orange dome then it would have had clear bulbs under it so you want in line pins.

But if you end up with the wrong pins it's not hard to file one pin off, they stay in place quite happily with just the one pin.

I would recommend against breaking up the orange plastic dome inside the units. I have de-tango'd mine and initially tried to do this and could see no way of avoiding damage to the delicate silver reflective surface. I think it's worth the extra bit of time to put them in the oven and open them up. I've had no problems with condensation after doing this, and you could always use some additional silicone sealant if worried about that.

I have already damaged the silver a little but really hard to see unless you look closely. If i see another set of headlamps on ebay I might buy them and retry de tangoing in the oven.
