Default Question About Classic Rear Bumper

Can someone in the know give me some advice on the following please?

I have just got my Terzo back from the bodyshop after 12 days for the fitting of a new rear bumper. The previous one was damaged in a "less than 10mph" shunt from behind. Insurance job and they decied to replace the whole bumper.

At the bodyshop I inspected it before driving away to find that there were no fixings at the bottom of the bumper, behind the wheel. I believe this is a special "locking" type bolt that twists into place. Instead it was held in place with cable ties!!! As a result the bumper had about 4 inches of play!! Also the black plastic spats where flopping around on badly fitted pop rivets!!

I complained and as they did not have the fitting kit, they agreed to temporarily put some bolts to hold the bumper tight and order a fitting kit for next week.

On getting home I have also noticed that there is a grinding noise from the rear wheels when I turn sharply (out of junctions etc). At some point they have removed the boot liner (new clips and it was not fitted right). Finally, my rear lights are not working!!!

So I ask, to remove and re-fit a bumper, do you have to remove the wheels, get access to the boot and disconnect the lights??

Thanks for reading.

Hi Alyn

Thanks for that. Yes it's going back next week, I remember shouting this a lot!! I have contacted the Insurance company and I have been appointed a "troubleshooter" who is contacting the bodyshop on Monday to find out what is going on and may be sending an independant engineer to inspect it.

12 days to fit a bumper!! I phoned everyday to be told, "it will be ready tomorrow!".

I should have ignored the Insurance Company and brought it to you Alyn!!

4 inches of play!! What have they done to your car mate? thats a lot of play there shouldn't be any! sound`s like there is no proper fitttings for your bumper there should be a big bar at the top section of the bumper held on with plastic push fit clips to remove the bumper you would remove the 4 big bolts going up through the rear chassis legs! then there is a bolt at the very end of the bumper sides at the top that go up into the 1/4 panel's, then there is a support bracket at the middle of the bumper just below the number plate that is fixed to the back panel at the bottom! and finally a 10mm bolt at the bottom of the 1/4 panel about 1/2 way along the sides that go onto L shaped brackets! the side extentions are meant to be fixed on with 4 bolts which are a nightmare to get off and the fittings for these do req replacement. the interior trim in the middle would have to be removed to undo the connecter's for the number plate light's. if your rear lights are not working you should remove the flap's on the trims and check the big multiplug's are plugged into the light units. hope this is of some help for you to see what is all missing from your bumper! the wheels do not need removed nor the lights! bug them till all the fittings are there as with it being an insurance job they will have charged your insurance company for all the fitting's for the bumper!
