A suspected car thief led police on a high-speed chase through Derbyshire last night.
Police were told that the Subaru Impreza, which was suspected of being stolen in Leicestershire, had crossed the border shortly after 5.20pm.
A chase ensued, during which the police helicopter trailed the vehicle and patrol cars tried to intercept it with stingers.
One stinger, a device designed to puncture tyres, was laid in Willington.
The second, which led to the car finally grinding to a halt in Sinfin, was put down in Wragley Way.
A Derbyshire police spokeswoman said the force helicopter began following the car on the A50.
It then travelled along the A6 to Shardlow and onto the Alvaston bypass to join the A52.
The driver zig-zagged on the A52 a few times before taking a route from Ockbrook to Kirk Hallam and ending up back on the A52.
From there, it went past Elvaston Castle, where it was seen travelling at 90mph, and rejoined the A50.
The Subaru was then driven south of Derby over the Swarkestone Bridge and through South Derbyshire villages including Ticknall, Repton and Willington.
It headed back towards Derby via Stenson Fields until it hit the stinger in Wragley Way.
Although it did not stop immediately, it eventually halted in Stenson Road, Sinfin, shortly after 6.05pm.
The driver and two passengers fled the scene.
The police spokeswoman added: "Three people got out of the car and ran off.
"One was detained almost immediately in Avocet Court, off Grampian Way.
"The man was believed to have been the driver and was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, failing to stop and theft of a vehicle."
Two other men were arrested later last night and were being questioned today.
Ben Wilson (25), of Willowside Green, Spondon, saw the police cars in pursuit while traveling along the A50 and A52.
He said: "I saw some police cars travelling at speed, along with the police helicopter, near the Alvaston bypass.
"Moments later, I saw the patrol cars heading towards Nottingham on the A52. It seemed like something serious."
No-one from Leicestershire police was available for comment.

Sounds like they had a nice drive out for a change, you usually see em on the telly driving down some boring motorway
May get in touch and ask for the route details for a future smacs run (except the field bit though!)
