Default why do my brakes squeak?

car is my99 uk turbo with godspeed disks and tar-ox pads on the front and standard setup on rear. i think its coming from the front but its really embarassing in car parks and stuff as its really loud, people turn round probably excpecting to see some old banger squeeling round. theres also like a clunking noise thats defineately from the front which i think is the pad shifting round but it never happened when i had standard setup so why now.
any help appreciated. cheers

Never heard it with redstuff. Heard it a lot with Mintex. Start to squeek about 1/4-1/2 way worn. Think its metal in the compound of the pad or something!

You should really post this in Technical, Brakes Wheels andTyres.
Some knowledgeable people only look in there.
I have no experience of your setup.
But, is there Copaslip or similar on the metal to metal contact points?
I use red brake grease on pad backs where the pistons bear 'cos I don't want Copaslip getting on piston dustseals.
Any pistons sticky?
Another possibility is glazed pads, sometimes they make noises.
Go out and do some hard breaking, when safe of course. See if that stops squeal.

Instructions to remove squeak

- Take your front wheels off.
- undo caliper
- remove brake pad
- put hand in gap and remove offending mouse
- put back brake pad
- re-affix caliper
- put wheels back on

Hey Presto!

I had serious squeaking like this on my old Civic Type R.

Turned out the stupid ***** at the Honda garage had forgotten to insert the shims (spacers) on the back of the pads.

10 mins of work and squeak gone for good.

If you can't get shims, then you could try some copper grease on the rear of the pads. Just be careful not to get any on the front.

Had the same on my scooby after the pads and discs were changed. Very annoying.

My father-in-law is a brake expert (as in he designed them for a living - along with the car my Scoobynet id is named after ), so I was discussing a squeak I had with him some time ago.

He told me that there is a very scientific process for fixing brake squeals:

If the anti-squeal shims are missing and they squeal, put the shims in.
If the anti-squeal shims are fitted and they squeal, take them out.

I got Tarox pads and they squeak - effing annoying it is too, but I won't be replacing them till they're worn out. Happy to look like my Scoobs on its last legs...
