I have recently put my car for sale and have had a call from someone asking for my VIN number. He did ask a few other questions but why would he want to know the VIN number ?Ive never had this asked before and cant help think its dodgy. What do you lot think ?

 

to see if it matches up with the reg on the log book?

 

probably checking whether import or not as vin number is a lot shorter on imports?

Probably for an HPI check - they can be done on reg, but VIN is more accurate. Of course he could be trying to clone your car....

As Meridian says itll be for an HPI check in all probablilty. Unfortunately it could also be for a fraudulent application for a log book for your car; either for a so-called 'clone' (a lot of this goes on) or for yours after theyve skanked it (unlikely). Id say that hes welcome to HPI it after hes been to see it; you can get a measure of him then.
