Question STi back box on standard WRX

probably been answered many times before (believe me i have searched all over the place) but can't find a definitive answer -

how much of a power increase will a standard 02 sti back box give me over my pea-shooter on a standard my02 wrx?

i know it's minimal and that the only real improvements are appearance and sound but need to double check this.

TIA

You wont get much improvement in power or sound, but they do look nicer!

Did it to my MY01, no noticeable difference in sound, might release a little more power but not much I wouldn't of thought, looks much better though

If you can get hold of a Prodrive back box (they come up on here or ebay every now and then ) then that will change the sound to a very nice burble

i've been keeping an eye out. was toying with the idea of full ppp but wanted to see if this made any difference to the sound in the first place. think i'll give it a try and go from there!

thanks to all for the advice

First mod I did.

Looks and sounds a lot better, gives you that flat four burble that you don't seem to get from the twin peashooters. Not really noticeable from inside the car though, which can be a good thing, everybody else can hear you coming though!

And you can pick them up for £20 or so and fit them yourself.

No definitive answer probably because no one has gone to the trouble of sticking one on a RR before and after. Like earlier posters say, its cosmetic, believe internals of an STi box are identical to the standard WRX box, IMO deffo hang on for a Prodrive PPP exhaust or a Prodrive WR Sport one which (it is believed..) is exactly the same internals as the PPP box, just has an oval rather a round tail pipe, and generally goes for a bit less on Ebay, both somewhere between £60 - £110, happy hunting!

As above, just had a prodrive 'oval' BB fitted and the difference is unbelievable. Much nicer sound without being too noisy.

From what I've read on here, the WR Sport exhaust won't give you any power gains at all but it will give you a better sound.

The Prodrive backbox however will give a slight power increase, especially if you replace either the centre or downpipes with a decat replacement. I was looking at the WR Sports exhaust myself but ended up getting the Magnex Oval 6x4 and the stright through centre section for a good price on this forum.

It looks great, sounds fantastic and has made the car more responsive IMO.

The WR Sport box by Prodrive is reputed to be identical to the PPP exhaust but with an oval rather than round tailpipe, side by side they look the same bar the tailpipe, read on S'net that someone cut them both apart and saw no diff...

If you do a search, there have been quite a few 'What is the difference between the WR Sport and PPP backbox' threads in the past...

Never heard anyone say WR Sport gives no power gain, only heard that said about the STi box.. but I still bought a PPP one to be one the safe side, LOL.

the WR Sport BB and the Prodrive ones are identical and made by scorpion for prodrive. As BrynO says, they difference is purely cosmetic, they will flow better than either of the stock backboxes.....as well as sound a whole lot nicer..

thanks everyone. gonna try the sti back box first - my scoob's a daily driver so don't want to go too mad from the off, plus i have other things to do - replacement speakers (now that i've added a dvd player), stealthbox for the sub (as my home-made 6 year old fibreglass box is a little bulky) and alloy refurb.
i may also change insurers when the renewal is due which will make the prodrive back-box an easier option

If you live anywhere near me you could pick one up for the price of a couple of pints! It was 6weeks old when it was changed.
