Default Clutch problem?

When driving to work today I noticed that when around 5k rpm the rev clock goes a bit crazy and it sounds like the car is revving madly but not going anywhere! It's almost like a feeling of driving on ice only my wheels are not spinning!

I have a 92 Legacy Turbo 4wd estate.

Somebody said it could be a clutch slipping problem but there are no issues at all when in lower gears / revs. The car does have a high clutch bite too.

Any ideas?
