Default potential new owner (still)

Hi guys,

Ive put a similar thread on before about reliability and maintanance costs, this time its about running costs.
I own a vx220 (non turbo) which is very good on petrol and cheap to service, the thing is now my girl freind lives 130 miles away and the long drive is awful in it. Not worried about the cars reliabilty because im looking at about an 03 plate standard wrx with 20k in it, which to my knoledge wont go wrong at all (tell me if im wrong). The 130 mile trip costs me about £14 driving quite fast but not red lining it in every gear of course and the service costs about £150 every 10k.
In comparison what would the scoob cost to the above and are there some major service works about 40k which will break the bank?

Thanx for reading hope you can help because you have to understand im only 22 and dont have millions to spend every week on it not when the insurance is £1300

First off, I wouldn't consider buying an 03 Scoob when the 06 model is so close. It should drop the value of the older models. Wait for a few months.

For fuel, will you be buying Optimax, or Super UL, or just using regular UL? Long motorway driving can increase your mpg to the high 20s, A roads & around town will reduce id to the low 20s. Servicing costs are not expensive, but to get an exact amount, why not call your local dealer & ask them the price for each service. You don't want any shocks for repairs, so buy the car from a main dealer & make sure it has Subaru warranty & take out extended warranty when it expires.

Depending how you drive, your main costs will be fuel & tyres. This will depend on your type of fuel (see above) & also brand of tyres. Sliding around bends & roundabouts will reduce tyre life to around 8k. Fast driving, only a few slides will increase this to 15k or more.

I would have thought an Ferrari, Bentley, etc would have cost slightly more to run, having said that depends what you cpompare it to i suppose.

Ok basics
Expect around 28 on a run and low twenties even late teens if you drive it like you stole it. arverage around 24-5mpg
Your £ 14.00 would get you around 90 miles i guess

Tyres, i used to get around 15K out of Goodyear eagle F1's with a mix of driving but mostly pretty hard

Servicing around every 9 or 10K depends on the model, think anything post classic is 10K which is an oil change at around £ 100.00 from a dealership
45K is a cambelt and fluid service which is a biggie at £ 350-400.00 I think ktat is the case for post classic models.

what you do get is a 4 door 5 seat 4wd car with around as mmuch interior space as a Mundeo with leccy bits, aircon and pretty good reliability capable of a sub 6 second 0-60 and great at covering distances quickly leaving the driver fresh as a daisy or covering distance very quickly if he/she wants a workout.

All that for around £16K new for a WRX or £21K for an STI which is a more rapid beastie.

In comparison to a VX220 the Scoob is, slower around track, corners like a boat, far heavier, Crap Fuel comsumption, expensive servicing and Parts, Insurance crippling, loses more money per year than Barrings Bank, Heatsoak, Every Criminal wants to steal or Hi-jack it and not forgeting No3 piston is always made of Chocolate

Welcome to the world of Scooby ownership

Enjoy

BTW for all that, the Scoob is a Fairly quick and comfortable 4 door Family shopping Car If your after a saloon Track Toy you'd be better to looking at a Mitsy on the MLR site. IMHO

Regards

I have had 2 subarus, both 93 wrxs. Fuel consumption has been really the same on both. A full tank of optimax is about £44 and out of that I would expect to get about 200-220 miles.

Have you considered an MR2 turbo ? I have one of these and prefer to drive it than the subaru ! It's 220 bhp but easily tuned for more if need be. I have not worked out how much I get to a tank, but it is quite a bit more than the subaru. Its a lovely car to drive.
