Default New Scooby Owner a little dissapointed

Is it me , or should things be just a little better on a 20k Car

Just bought my first scoob 05 wrx due its first service this weekend.

There are some things about it that already niggle me .

The lag until the car gets up to 3k
the fact that the seats are built for larger people, offering very little support for a car that generates so much grip in the corners.
Paint quality, dont know if mine is a bad one , but the lacquer appears so soft that even washing it causes scratches

Why couldnt they have fitted a steering column that moves in and out as well??

Apart from that its marvellous , and i cant wait to get past this wait for 1000 before going over 4k

Its a heavy car with only 220bhp. Dont expect too much and you will be happy.

You do need to very careful with the paint, when I wash mine I use 2 buckets one for the suds and one to rince out the wash mit.

surely you must have known most of that before you bought it? surely you test drove one before you purchased?

seems like common sense stuff to me.

find your best really twisty backroad. Do it in the scooby, and then do it in a normal car (girlies micra or something) you'll appreciate how good the car is

Hi CBGB

TBH you will not statrt to get the best from the engine until 6K miles + when it get loosened up. as far a lag goes it is turbocharged, the turbo needs to get upto speed beofre delivering the goods, It should cut in around 3+k revs but if you only are going to 4k during running in then you are not likely to be experiencing much benefit also re turbo lag, change gear and boot it, easier once run in and able to get past 4K revs!

Paint is soft but that is more to do with modern paints i believe.

Steering column - the seat moves i believe, try that

I am a fat basta@d so cannot comment on the seat from your POV - only eat more pies!

for 20K i recon it is a good allround package although surely 17-18K is more the mark for a WRX?

I think he just needs to be patient and wait until he can rev it past 4k to be honest - I dont think most people have noticed that in his post.
No point in recommending PPP, exhaust or upgrades until he's driven the car how it should be driven first.

One word for you: MOD!

If you need the warranty get a PPP conversion - this will transform engine response - used with Optimax it will be lag FREE and very responsive - outside warranty you could try cos like WRC at Silverstone for huge performance enhancement - or read last few Scooby Mag articles by Andy Forrest on how to upgrade WRX to over 300 bhp for sensible money

Alternatively, quickly sell and buy 03 / 04 STi PPP - that doesnt lack power or response!! - In winter - wear a neck brace...!! - Tis that violent

You have landed on the first rung of the ladder (a rather expensive route) and tis now the time to mod and revel in its capability...

If you have waited a long time to get one like i did, your expectations can get too high, relax! sit back and consider what else you can get for 20 k, you have just bought a 222BHP full time 4wd that will hit 60 in under 6 sec, 100 in under 16 and yet is remarkably refined and comfortable and seats 4 adults in comfort with a big boot. Its no longer the fastest thing on the road but you cant go any faster for the money, with ppp of course its a different proposition!
Seat / Wheel - I havent had a problem with the steering adjustment, the seat is very adjustable and when you get comfy the driving position is second to none and the pedals are perfectly placed.
Paint - mines 2yrs old and it has worn well apart from bonnet stone chips.
Power - With any new car its always a bit tight at first, these engines dont lag, below 3k youre simply off full boost, try a Civic Type R below 6k your under the vtec switch. The turbo is beginning to boost at 2k, between 2-3k theres a significant ammount of power, its just that with all 4 pot blown motors the switch at around 3-3.5k is so stunning it makes the lower boost power seem less. The gear ratios are well placed to keep the engine in the power band, you'll get used to it!

With regard to the seats, Halfords do some great booster items

I was dissapointed with my 02 WRX when i first picked it up, because no you cant see what its really like on a test drive!!.

Then i had a complete de-cat exhaust fitted, different car.

Do it as soon as you can.

You need to be over 30, balding and around 14 stone to fit the seats properly.

Dont wash it then

Why couldn't they fit a cup holder with a nice action either

Why bother limiting it, you'll have upgraded to an Sti long before the engine goes pop, just drive it like u stole it.

If you're dissapointed with the paint now - just wait for the first anniversary and you get to see all the lovely stonechips.

As for the modern paint comment - get an Audi and see the difference .

Just remember where they've spent the £20k and you wont go too far wrong - Virtually all the investment is under the bonnet and in protecting you from a bad crash .

would agree with the paint but you could have got one for 16K and with better seats if you had bought a EU import

Subaru bodywork and chassis finish is **** to be perfectly honest. But you pay for what you get and it certainly isnt build quality you pay for. A lot of the metal pipework and screws in my engine bay are rusty and the usual wishbone underneath etc and its a V reg 2000. Maybe the newer ones are better who knows. If you want build quality get an Audi or Saab. As for performance it doesnt come alive till after 3k rpm!

That'd be down to our healty diet of fish and chips, MaccyD's and KFC washed down with a gallon of 'diet' coke. As opposed to snails, garlic, fois gras, truffles, horse meat and red wine..!

Or could it be that the USA gets the same (supersized) seats..?

As someone said on here before the new standard Impreza's are just warmed saloons compared to the rally monsters they use to be. There still amazingly quick, but will get chased by a Civic Type R, Cupra etc people expect too much out of them, but as said above once PPP'd or modified a bit they become a totaly different car!

thats the real reason they fit an aluminium bonnet to the sti
not to reduce weight but so the stone chips dont rust
