Impreza to Impreza or Impreza to EVO?

Impreza to Impreza or Impreza to EVO?
I have a UK turbo with the usual mild mods (TEK, Exhaust etc) and I'm well aware that its no match for an EVO6. However, over the weekend I bit after being sucked in by an EVO 6 driver and before the cries of "What did you expect" you can guess the outcome.
The thing is, the EVO drove around the outside of me on a roundabout and then managed to weave through a few other cars in the process. Now theres no way my Impreza would have been able to cope with that and it would have just understeered into the curb or another car. Although looking rather like an accident waiting to happen it just showed that the EVO has quite apparent handling abilities more advanced than my UK car. I don't beleive UK cars to be the poor relation but I'm now thinking about a change.
I could throw a couple of grand at my UK scoob and improve power/handling or just sell it and either buy an STI V5/6 or an EVO 5/6.
I appreciate that asking if I should buy an EVO on scoobynet might be a bit daft but I could do with genuine opinions on which would be the better alternative to thowing more money at my current scoob.
Just a little disillusioned right now

Edd,
Even in the land of EVO the VI is deemed pretty special so you certainly decided to have a tango with one of the best! Before being 'sucked-in' completely a couple of things are worth considering;
Don't get down hearted, get booked in for some driver training!
Kevin
P.S. Don't be offended by the training, I know I would benefit!

- how much of that incident was down to the driver ability - not having a pop, but it might be worth investing in some specific training as you will almost certainly be surprised at the improvements. It won't cure unwanted understeer, but you'll hopefully gain an insight into what actions your are doing that bring it on.
- possibly he had less scruples in attempting such driving in a public environment and your natural instincts thought I ain't taking that chance. I remember a nutter in a bog standard Sunbeam (yes I'm that old) determined to nail me at a roundabout in my old XR2 - he did lead onto the roundabout but he took the second exit because it suited his terminal understeer that had set in!
- What happens when you buy an EVO and a Skyline overtakes you on the outside?

It was not that long ago I had a run in with a newish M5 on a 5 mile stretch of twistys. Every bend I pulled away from him and on the straights he would catch up and I would leave him again in the next bend..... Is it because my Scooby is better than his M5 through the bends... No way! Is it because I am a better driver? Who knows. Is it because I am braver/more stupid than him... Yes probably.
The Evo 6 is a fantastic car but I suspect it will cost you quite a bit to upgrade. Is it really worth it? If it is going to make you drive like an idiot on public roads then I recommend you don't do it.

Another hugely important factor not considered here: Do your upgrades extend to the suspension? Power upgrades make little difference in the bends. An Evo 6 is MUCH harsher than a relatively soft classic -better cornering, but much worse ride. If you'd upgraded your classics suspension, you'd notice less difference.

I'd say if you have the funds, go for the EVO. Even if you go back to a scoob later on at least you actually tried both types.

there was an article in the SIDC magazine a while back on hill climbing. The author said that everyone was going flat out in their imprezas, say 60 through bends! Then the instructor had a go in a 2 wheel drive cavalier and went through at 80!
I had a tangle with a 22B 2 weeks ago. Me in my04 standard sti (just springs and toyos on it). We were in an area that had dual carriage ways with roundabouts in between, on the straights he was that close i could see there was 3 in the car with one (no belt on) in the middle, i couldnt have said if his lights were on as it was that close, but come the roundabout i let the back end do its thing and i left him big time, hit the straight and he was on me, went round and round for a while until he gave up! Sure he could have easily gone past on the straight but i think he wanted to have a go on a roundabout. I have been on some driver training and think its down to that as i dont have a fear of being sideways.

I'd say keep ya car, save the cash, and let the Evo driver kill himself if he wants to, or someone else for that matter! Don't get me wrong, Im no saint behind the wheel, but pushing a Scoob\Evo to its limits on the public round take some thrashing, and it only takes one crap driver, and I mean the old duffer, or new green L plate driver who's not aware of whats going on around them, and someones gonna get REALLY hurt! (I'll get down off me soap box, and put away the suckable eggs )

U have to remeber as well you wasnt in the right spot either to do what he did
And its not the car that lets people do this a big part as Scoobydood said is (bravery/stupidity?) and luck as well I had a mate that could ride bikes and drive cars like you wouldnt beleive and he really could
If you gave him a Mk2 Escort there wasnt many people he couldnt beat on the right roads its all to do with how much you will push yourself and then bravery/stupidity will also play a part in the sum

Personally going from a 4door STI4 to an Evo 7 (both standard suspension wise as they were new) I think the Evo gives you a lot more confidence in the bends, it just feels so much more able. That is probably the main difference between the 2. As is always mentioned servicing is more frequent but I used to get 18MPG out of my STI and I get 25 easily from the 7 I guess because its got much more torque (260 vs 330LB/FT). The Scoob was much comfier but I found the brakes **** poor, I cracked the discs in 10K miles. Off the line the Scoob was a lot easier to get moving and I would say faster a fair bit faster to 60 but slower from then on (my Evo has 320BHP, my Scooby had 280 ish). I don't like the Evo clutch at all but the gearbox is a lot better than my Scoob was. Mine was decated so I think you would miss the exhaust note every single time you drive the Evo though, I know I do. The Evo is a fantastic car and better in most ways I think but I loved my Scooby more , it was great fun.
PS most people would agree that a 6 looks more ruff tuff and dangerous than a 7 but most would also agree a stock 7 will out handle and brake a stock 6. Also a 6 now has a similair chav rep to the classic Impreza.

I have a classic sti with Gab suspension kit and believe me when I say the thing would outstick a std Evo suspension anyday and yes I have met a few on the way back from Santa pod, virtualy no body roll you can swing it here there and everywhere and it feels so safe and solid (not that I do) ...But the ride quality is compromised :-( ...Evo is nice but you will miss the unique burbling sound of the scoobs..

If people are comparing cars handling shouldn't we stick to standard Scoobs and standard Evos suspension wise. Evos can be upgraded to ya know. Ohlins mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Again personally the standard Evo suspension is only too hard when you are going slowly, at speed (50+) on B roads the control is fantastic. Bumps, mid corner or otherwise have not been a problem. A suspicouly quick Saab was right behind me a while back, right up until the road narrowed and the corners arrived
Nod to talent making the biggest difference. Wish I had some .

You are right, like for like, uk turbos are fully european type approved, where as the evo 6 needs to be sva-ed like type r/ra.
STI/JDM suspension is a lot harder and some RA's come with abs

Okay, so we've decided what I'm mostly lacking is talent!?
I would have to say its quite true, however irrespective of the car I was driving I doubt I would have risked the weaving through traffic said EVO performed.
Anyway, for now I'll stick to my current car and see if my local track (Pembrey) has some driving courses available. A mate did say to me the first modification I should make is get some decent track days/lessons and see what improvements me and the car could do with.
Ah well, moral if the story is "Don't bite" in the first place.

Doesn't matter how capable the car and driver are, sooner or later you answer to Sir Isac Newton.....And he always wins!!! Best to save that kind of behaviour for the track!

Anyone can drive like a *** end can't they. U said u wouldn't take the risks the ***** in the Evo (blimey I hope it wasn't me !) did and that is a good thing for you and every other road user. Tuition to improve driving skills is something pretty much everyone could do with a bit (or a lot) more of and will more than likely make you a more sensible but talented driver rather than a wheel warrior I would think.

I maybe wrong but the only fully euro type approved evo is the new 260.
Is this correct ?

Assuming equal drivers a std scooby classic ? will be no match for an EVO 6, after all it cost ten grand more out of the box. Equally a standard EVO7/8 will out handle a standard EVO 6 although straight line performance would be hair splitting
Having moved from a classic scooby with similar mods to you (+ the Powerstation handling mod ) to an EVO8 it would be no contest , EVO every time. Even with my limited skills i find I can drive the EVO quicker than the scooby with less fuss. I still think the scooby is a great car, one of the best cars of the 90's. An EVO more expensive ?..yes for Insurance/tyre wear/pad wear/if > 10K miles per year add servicing as well. Not much in it with regard to petrol.
If funds are a problem (ie new scooby/evo) invest in driver training such as HPC or Don Palmer? and get satisfaction that way...probably the most satisfying of all!
