Do people have a 2nd car because.......
1, it cost's too much to run the scooby all the time?
or
2, they want to keep the milage down, keep it in good condition etc?
I fall in the No1 group!, but with motor traders insurance, i only need one policy for the scooby, and my trusty astra diesel estate work horse!

as i used to say, its one thing buying one, but its another keeping them going.
for the same milage now i put £15 diesel in the astra and £15 in the scooby, saving at least £20 a week. even more if i don't use the scooby.
I run about in a 2nd car during the week because: (2.0i 406 estate)
1. I dont want to put mileage on the scooby
2. It eats so much petrol its not worth driving everywhere.
3. probably most important one I want to enjoy the scooby when i go out in here, If i drove it all the time, it would get boring and you would get used to it, by driving something like smaller and slower when you get in her, you realize how amazing it is all over again.
4. I dont want to mes the interior up and i some times move around stock and car parts, so i get the estate dirty.
5. Some times its nice to drive down the road with no noise and trail of destruction and no one to notice you
LOL

number 1, save cash with a 2nd car compared to high costs of everyday driving.
but also number 2, managed to do nearly 10K in 6 mths, since i got the KA (8mths) i have only managed 3.8K in scoob, and kept it off the road quite a lot in the winter when the salt is on the road. Its not much fun driving in icy conditions either, if someone hits the KA then i wont worry a great deal!
The additional one for me is the rush hour traffic. I find it a bit of a pain in scoob, just going from 1st to 2nd all the time and it seems to drink the same amount of fuel as booting it! The grin factor is massively improved when taking the scoob out, no concerns either for wearing the tyres down quickly with the reduced miles!

I'm with 1 & 2
I have a Focus 1.8 zetec for every day stuff, the Scoob comes out very little.
Last year after major engine work & other Mods I only covered about 800 miles in as many months, is it worth it I ask myself, Oh yes......

Drive about in a ford Transit with 330,000 genuine miles on the clock
all week.....running it on 70% cooking oil at 46p a litre......which means i save myself a fortune on diesel and can buy gallons of optimax at 89p a litre and keep my right foot fimly bedded to the floor when safe to do so.

Reasons I have a second car:
don't want to rack miles on the Impreza
I don't like leaving it parked where I dont know, I've had stuff nicked off Imprezas before
Crazy fuel prices/poor economy
Door dinking wallies

I run 2 Imprezas as I had a 5dr for 3 years but always hankered after a saloon so when I got a limited edition terzo found that the rear seats did'nt fold down so trips to the dump and Homebase were impossible decided to keep both so now spend £100 - £120 a week on petrol.
To me even the extra insurance cost of £1200 a year for the 2nd car is well worth the fantastic enjoyment of driving these awesome motors.

Iv'e got a Fiesta for commuting to work and back (45miles in total ),
And my wife drives the Scoob in the week (and loves it !!)
She just potters around, drives slowly and safely (Kids in car)
does no miles to bother about.
Then come weekends, i give her a right good seeing too !!
(The car not the missus) !!!!!!!

Yeah - agree.
All of the above - I run a second car (and have done since I bought the scoob 18 months ago).
It saves money, depreciation, the parts are cheaper, I enjoy the scoob more, etc.

It'll keep me going (and the scoob hopefully) for many years to come!
P.S. Can you chip the astra turbo diesels???
I'm all of the above, the second car is a soft top with small boot, so the Scoob is the practical car for going (quickly of course) to Homebase etc.
Don't use either car in the week as my commute is by train and I walk to the station.

i use the scooby daily, its my car it gets used!!! milage is what happens to cars when you drive them..
the wife uses her car for work, its what people do.
whats the point of buying a car and not driving it? if you want to do that give me your scoob, i,ll drive it while you walk to the station or ride your bike.???
dont tell me youl be putting cling film round the tyres to stop the tread getting scuffed.

why by a car and not drive it.
you dont have a dog and bark yourself do you??

no one said not driving it, just not as much!
Miles happen, some more than others. As with dogs we all buy for different reasons, to guard, fashion accessory, trusty companion etc.
Having run an 01 WRX for a year, including trips to Le Mans, Wales WRC, other car events and work, 22K miles and an empty wallet made a 2nd car a wise decision, tyres, car wear, fuel, insurance etc all saved, make an economically wise decision.
You have a dog to bark, i have money to enjoy not waste! Scoob will be out in the evening and weekends, its not wrapped up and kept away from things, its just used in the right environment - b roads, not rush hour commuting, squeezed in a multi-storey or behind a gritter!

Just got a brand new A4, keeping the scoob for weekends.
As a motorway mile muncher it’s fantastic.
Think you just have to have two different mind sets ... one driving up and down the motorway etc etc (did this for two years in the Scooby)
Two -Subaru driving I definitely appreciate the Subaru characteristics more now, covering ~30k miles a year in a Scooby on long boring motorway runs is not fun, the thrill soon wears a bit thin.
But come the weekends

one of the apparent downsides to using the scoob daily is, as someone has already said, that you get used to the car.. then you start to mod it .. doh
needless to say when you get a courtesy car from the garage, then get back in your own it feels amazing..

I reckon unless you do over 10k miles there is no way a second car can save. I sat down and worked it all out. Even buying a £200 banger with £300 insurance. By the time you tax it and budget in for repairs and MOT it outweighs the fuel saving. It would be nice tho, help me appreciate the scoob when I get back in it.
