NEVER buy a car at night.

however, when looking in daylight -

start car from cold - see what comes out of the exhaust
any nasty sounds coming from the engine
tyres
shocks
hesitance on accelleration

tbh, I'd take somebody who knows about Scoobs - there's an awful lot of things to catch out a newbie.....

I think the AA/RAC do this type of service for a nominal fee. Also, places like TSL will do a car check, but you got to get it to them......

Deffo worth it - after all a blown engine is big bucks on this car.....

Best of luck

Dan

Not trying to be to negative, however I can only call on my own experience.

Purchased my 94 WRX-RA 18 months ago, it was absolutley mint & still is. However when I took the car into a well reputable garage for MOT & other bits & pieces, it turned out the engine was screwed.

The worrying thing was you could not tell, it was still so quick & quite and running to what I and many others considered superb.

On investigation it was apparent that No 4 cylynder was very low on compression, and after further investigation it was agreed that the engine was beyond economic sense to even think of carrying out the work.

Anyway after quite a long time in the garage & a lot of dosh over 6k, it's now in fine fettle & awfully quick.

6k was not the bill for the repair, I had plenty of mods along the way, plus the garage is what I consider to be amongst the supreme list of engineers in the UK.

in short be sure, because I and many others, including other scooby menders did'nt pick up on the fault.

hope you find a good one out there, and enjoy your toy.

It's quite an old car now and things 'may' be at the point where they need replacing.

Listen for unusual knocking from the engine, strange noises from the turbo. I tend to use the old long screwdriver trick to listen for abnormal engine/turbo noises, but you've obviously got to know what you're listening for.

Check if any service history and if cambelt was done at around 45k.

It's the same as any other car really, but there are common problems.

Excessive wear on inner or outer edges of the tyres indicate geometry problems.
Give the old suspension a bounce.
Check panel/door alignment, look for leaks around the doors (not the vegetable kind of leak)

If you haven't driven one before the shock can make you forget everything you need to check - just try and keep a level head.

Definitely check for oil leaks. They can be prone for the rocker cover gaskets leaking. The sump should be dry and not look as if it's just been wiped.

Check around the bottom of the power steering pump to for leaks.

I could go on for hours, but just use common sense - if it doesn't look or sound right, then it probably isn't and expect to pay silly money for repairs.

Positive, why your heading on an adventure.

An adventure of beating most burberry clad villans off the lights .......

Oh and the potential to beat that slow tractor to the next bend.

My experience of owning an Impreza, fffff-ing brilliant.

Drive safe
