Question

The exhaust tailpipe on my my00 is a lot more sooty than previous (non Scooby) cars I've had.
Is this a trait of Scoobies or does it point to an over rich mixture?
The car is bog standard btw (for now !).

Question

Got the same problem - MY00 6000 miles: it would almost indicate a tuning problem, but there are no other symptoms so I'm very interested in what others have to say....

Cool

...and you are wondering about bad mileage...?

I believe it's a safety feature from Subaru...run it rich to cool the engine.

...and my MY00 does it as well.

Sooty? I thought we were always on about Scooby Doo.

Yep my tail pipe looks like it has been dipped in toner.

Mine too, my00 7000 miles,
just been in for 7500 service i mentioned to the service manager that it was sooty after a 200 mile run and shouldnt it be nice and grey,i thought it was probably running rich as 21 mpg seems crap to me,he said there all like that, something to do with modern car engines and cats,it went on the computer and was fine.

My MY99 car with 21k is the same, i believe Paul W (well his service manager anyway) is correct 'bout modern engines, unleaded petrol, cats and stuff. i cannot remember the last time i got that nice mid/light grey colour round me orifice (oh er!). My girlies (should i say parteners, it will wind her up so i will stick with GIRLIES) Puma 1.7 is the same, sooty pipe, she commutes 160 miles per day at a constant 80-90mph i regularly do 100-200 mile trips @ the same sorts of speed, same!.
One solution is to clean it with WD 40 or such like. Another is to 'get out more' and not worry about it.

Paul

Mine to (WRX93).

Went up to the Lake District last week, about 345miles (One way).

Was expecting me tailpipe to be white-ish when I got there, but it was Sooty. Car run fine tho and returned about 29mpg over the whole weekend. Still cost me a fortune in fuel tho (About £100 to the Government & £25 to the petrol company). NICE LITTLE ERNER !!!!

Unleaded exhausts will often be blacker/sootier that the old grey colour we were used to when engines ran on leaded petrol. This is partly because lead oxides are white and mixed with soot and you ended up with a grey mix. Unleaded - no lead oxides. DL.

If your scooby has a light grey/white exhaust start to worry cos it will be running lean.

Its a very good way of checking how the car is running on a track day in particular, if you come off track, have a look at the exhaust colour, if it is white stop running straight away.

I have seen cars with upgrade chips fitted run on track days with snowy white exhausts, lets just say "engine failure" has occured on at least one.

Question

Be wary of any upgrade chip that offers a power increase coupled with a reduction in fuel consumption?

No David, a power increase can be coupled with better economy due to the engine running more efficiently and giving you more output for less input. Never works for me though, i get ****e economy round south londons traffic ridden roads!
