Angry insurers over charging jap cars owners

before i bought my type r i rang insurance companys for quotes and knew i would be paying more. when i asked them why we pay more the explanation was this " because your car is japanese it costs more money than a uk car to buy parts as they would have to ship any parts or new car from japan in the event of an accident " i recently had some work done to my car due to a transit van reversing into the front of my car in a local car park. not much damage but i had to get a front splitter. rang insurance company to sort the car out, got taken to local subaru dealer. when i asked how long the parts would take to come from japan i got told all the parts would be sourced from the uk and it would be a few days.
so why are we paying nearly double insurance premiums than a uk car?????

Who knows, probably just an excuse to charge more.

I rang Tesco for a quote - £550

Mentioned it was an import - jumped to £870...... There's no way they can justify that sort of increase. I know Jap models have no security, but I have a top of the range Toad alarm/imobiliser + a Tracker monitor which must be better than the UK standard security.

Tell me about it!
When i phoned my insurance company up to see if i could get the price down, i offered to upgrade my alarm system to a cat 1 and/or fit a tracker. They then told me it didnt matter if i had an alarm or not, it wont make a differance
SO whats the point in all these stupid costs?

my insurance is £970 fully comp 27 yrs old with full ncd, cat 1 alarm and tracker monitor24. on a p1 i can get it for £600. most p1 parts fit the type r. i think a few snotty e-mails may be getting sent to mr insurance company requesting an explanation in the price difference on jap cars.

I made this discovery last friday:

S2000 = £590 per year
UK Impreza turbo = £750 per year

One is group 20, one is group 17. I can't afford the S2k yet.

Insurance is all about risk and statistics.

Alcazar, if there's been more Pug 206's written off than Xantia's, then the premium is going to reflect this.

Likewise, I'm sure there's been more Impreza's written off than the S2000, so although it's a higher group and more expensive car it may not be as big a risk.

Personally, I think it's about time the public had full access to the insurers statistics and risk assessments. If we knew what affected the policies, we could make decisions for ourselves.

I've given up blaming the insurers - it's not worth the agro

i did ask my insurance company "tesco" why the premiums were high, and they said

you area sir is higher risk than the area down the road
i said how can that be its only 2 miles away, i live in the middle of no where, they would have to drive to my house to nick the car

sorry sir, its nothing to do with me, you areas is assessed and given a rating out of 100, the higher the number out of 100 the higher the insurance premium
well outraged to say the least, i said what will cause the premiums to go up then?

well, ermm,
what, i said

say there is 100 cars in the village and 4 are stolen, or 3 stolen four crashed, do u get me sir, then this affects the rating out of 100 making it higher, incidently sir if there are none stolen or crashed then your premium would be reduced, ok
all i can say is what s*ite

they have no excuse if ya ask me

Best bit!!

I moved house, Rang Subaru insurer, they say you now have a better post code i will put £42 per month back over your remaining direct debits

Rang insurance company for daily drive Escort, no change in policy but that will cost you £15 for changing your details!! Slags!!

worst bit:
Import Type R at 24 = £1560 fully comp with Full no claims
POS 1.3 Escort shed model value £180 if sold to david blunkett = £560 TP/FT as they dont take into account your other no claims!!

so if i crash the escort do i have to tell them i have had a crash when i insure the subaru, if they dont carry over no claims bonus why should i carry over claims?? W!nkers

Over the last 2 years i have not been stopped by the police at all so i could have saved nearly £4k by not paying my insurance like a number of the scally tw*ts round here

i'm not a happy bunny

They have this here in Germany. Every insurance company is legally obliged to provide their insurance tables. You can request these from the insurers and compare them yourself and see exactly where you can save with each insurer. Its complicated, but you can manually calculate exactly what your insurance should be, so you know if an insurance company is pulling a fast one and you also know exactly what details to give to get the biggest discount.

Default it is simple

The reason the imported WRXen are more expensive is because there is much higher risk on these cars compared to the UK sourced cars. In simple terms: more of them have claims against them.

I suppose because a few years ago; they were cheaper opening up a new kind of buyer who were more likely to smash it up and cause a claim. Insurance always takes an age to catch up given that parts are UK sourced and the price/power of the cars has evened up a little

The normal story for this sort of thing is the case of the mark3 astra. The mark3 (the smaller squatter one) had massive insurance because the mark2 became a joyrider car in the 80's even though it was slower and more expensive.

I remember having a really hard time to get insurance for my brand new bugeye WRX in 2001 - they refused to believe it was not an import.
