i dont want to start hacking bone and never be able to put it back to standard just for the sake of 6X9`s

There's a bit on Chiark's site that says the shelf DOES come out, and how to do it, and that SOME 9x6's will fit, but not which ones.

There's also been a bit on SIDC recently where someone made a shelf from MDF too, not easy, apparently, but looked good once done:
