Bugeye vs Blobeye - opinions please
Hi folks,
I'm a newbie to Scoobynet so sorry if this has been posted before. Please forward me to an earlier thread if so.
Having owned 2 Classic Turbos, then having sold them and gone the 330Ci route (don't ask, have since sold), I'm now ready to get back to Scoobyland.
Some of the things I didn't like about the Classic (intrusive road noise, yoghurt pot plastics, service intervals, for example) seem to have been addressed in the newer versions of the car, but I just wanted to know are there significant differences between the MY01/02 and MY03 cars, except looks of course.
I think Blue and Red Mica are fantastic colours and couldn't believe it when Subaru dropped them from the Blobeye range. Chuffin' morons. I'm thinking about a Blue Mica bugeye for about £14,500 and then PPPing it (headlights and all), but I'm interested to know people's experiences with both cars. Is the Blobeye a significantly different car?
Many thanks,
Chug.

on the blobeye wrxs, they are slightly more powerful,on the STIs they are exactly the same engines(uk versions)slight suspension changes, more bouncy on the blobeyes!and as i own a STI7 and driven the 8 the seats on the STI7 are a lot better seem to hold you in place a lot better,so overall in the STIs no real difference but on the wrxs they are quite a bit different.
....on the STi. But on the MY03 WRX I believe the PPP takes it to 261bhp (265PS) vs. the bugeye WRX PPP which I thought was 242bhp.
Personally I used to own a bugeye WRX, then test drove a MY03 WRX STi PPP and had to have one. The bugeye was a good car but I haven't looked back since.
All depends on what you want from a car (and what you're prepared to pay for it).

"Bugeye's" Rock

As a personal opinion and of course totally bias
Both Bug and Blob versions suffer from being tooooooo Lardy
and really need PPP or equivilent

Nellie is correct the MY02STi7 seats a far better than the MY03STi's

the new PPP kits use the same ECU calibration for the 01/02 and 03. So a 01/02 with a recent PPP kit fitted will be the same power output (261bhp) as an 03 with PPP.
. When I had the PPP fitted to my MY02 thats what the dealer told me and I have to say that my car feels slower than the MY03 PPP which I had a test drive in before fitting..[Edited by Yorkie - 12/17/2003 8:49:55 PM]

....is an uprated fuel pump really going to make a car feel faster?
sounds to me as if the dealer was talking out of his ar$e ?
I had an uprated fuel pump fitted to mine and can't say I have felt any difference that is attributable directly to it. TSL told me it was going to be beneficial more in terms of engine safety than anything else (ie. stopping the car running lean) - and was a sensible precursor to a remap (I already have full decat)
all IMHO

Better fuel pumps won't improve performance, but they will stop your engine going *bang* due to fuel starvation...
I've got a blobeye, so am biased, but I found the handling on the 03 quite a bit better than the 01. Having had the car for 8 months now, I do want to do something to remove some of the body roll and apparently the spring kit (prodrive handling pack) may be worthwhile.
Engine-wise, I think I'm going to avoid the PPP for now and go for a few mods when I'm out of warranty and the car is fully paid for

chiark After talking to DrEvil I would say the Prodrive springs are an essential purchase as is a good geometery set up!
As for the origninal PPP on the MY01 mine gave me 261Bhp on the Power Engineering rollers!

My PPP'd MY01 only got 252bhp on the PE Rollng Road and that was with an STI bonnet scope, scoop splitter and group N panel filter. Torgue was 234lb/ft though, so lower than the Prodrive quote. The 252bhp was obviously better than the Prodrive quoted 242.
Can't see how an MY01/02 with just PPP managed 261bhp without any other mods. The MY03 has more power in standard form, so Prodrive must have altered the ECU setup on the latest PPP...surely?? (I know, don't go me shirely!)
