Question

Why do we bother modifying our cars?

It's just a complete waste of money, time and effort!!

I guess this is aimed more at drivers who have never been near a track....well maybe a track car park But for most of you that just go to meets and a gay cruise, what is the point....?

Harder springs - they make it more uncomfortable for road use and .5 secs quicker round track. Worth £500 fitted.....NO!

Brakes - Standard brakes are fine for road use.

Big spoiler - No performance enhancement - Verdict = Max Power and gay.

Dump Valve - No performance enhancement - Verdict = Max Power and gay.

Body kits - No performance enhancement - Verdict = Max Power and gay.

Big exhaust - More power yes, however you will fail noise test at a track day, and fail an MOT, it makes you unsociable too. No performance enhancement - Verdict = Max Power and gay.....possibly?

I have even seen roll cages fitted to cars that have never been on track.....and racing seat and harnesses...TELL ME what is the point? No performance enhancement - Verdict = Max Power and gay.

Its not a dig at Impreza driver, just on observation....heck I even bought some black indicators for the Porsche the other day.......why....thats £15 down the pan.

Discuss.

Pete, the pleasure would be all mine.

The best Impreza would be a UK bodied and suspensioned 4/5 door, a P1 Engine, MY99 Wheels, and the MY00 spoiler (any bigger is GAY), if a 4 door .

Job done.

The Docs gotta point, in a funny way.

I spent money on mods because my pay packet is literally a lottery win every week, and I just cant get rid of it fast enough.

Ok.....maybe not

surely the answer is because you can mod IF YOU WANT TO. When you bought your house did your boyfriend/mum make you decorate mr lewis. If you did why???? surely a waste of money and possibly ruined the look/interior of the house!!!

only a guess though

john P

You decorate a house to improve it, and hopefully make some money come resale time (well thats what I have done).

With a car it really is money down the drain, even if they are good mods!

I hate to use FulhamP1 (I think) as an example, but I think he has spent near on 30k on an MY01! I doubt he has done a track day....so what was the point?

I am genuinly confuesd? If you are depererate to spend your money each month....then buy a better car.....

------------------------------------------------------------------

What a daft example!!

When you decorate a house and spend money on it you 'generally' increase its value!!

With a car you DECREASE its value by an inverse proportion - ie. you spend £1000 on mods it knocks £2000 off the resale value and thats IF you can find a buyer, which you won't be able to!!

Mods say ONE thing and ONE thing only ......... RoyBacer!! no better than the spotty 17 year old with his Nova - just bigger kids spending more money!!

as you said you THINK you have improved your house but some one else may say it looks like ****. Really confused about how recent threads are going as for a board for Scooby drivers all you and a few others are intent on is slagging people off who drive a different model.
Pete do you really like the cars as you seem just as unhappy?

Not to fussed on what is happening but as you say I am new and used this forum for some good advise, generally reading as useful and not posting, now I have grown up I am trying my hand at new skills

Sadly, I am not local to Swindon ....... its just that I bought my Impreza there and have servicing done there - they used to be good ...............

..... but I have reason to doubt their ability now! On my last service I mentioned the Alarm wasn't working well (There is a screening kit available under warranty) they took the unit out to get the serial number off it to order the correct parts and would contact me .................. guess what? a MONTH later no news! So I ring them, we will get back to you .......... NOTHING!!

Cr4p service!!

Pete

not sayint anything about my car or his car, but would like to suggest that a lot of my modding was done just for fun/hobby & cos i can afford to? i would suggest that a lot of people just enjoy the buzz albeit short lived of enjoying that new mod, great feeling cant be beaten(for about 10 mins beofore you get bored) i have to agree largley though a waste of money ah well

if you find a better garage let me know, was going to use Hendries as they do the next door neighbours you guessed it Jap WRX. Prices seem to be same as Simpsons. No probs with them yet but always like to keep the options open

Agreed, with the exception of brakes and maybe a discretely more burbly back box. For me, brakes essential as I *DO* do track days. For Joe scooby owner, yes gay, especially if painted red.

Prodrive backbox or maybe a scoobysport, I'll give you that one.

Dustbin sized HKS crapers? Sh1te, totally.

Other stuff? Total waste of money

Agree with PS and ID on this one.....unless you are a heavy track day user all the mods are just p1ssing into the wind- especially the cosmetic ones.

Thats it then, we all agree - fitting mods makes you a fanny!!??

I wouldn't go that far, as I am very PC, but - yes - I have to admit ..... fitting mods is a MUGS game!

Donate the money to a childrens charity and do some good! it has the side effect of you not looking a complete and utter wally too!! Result, in anyones book!

replacement exhaust is essential for any Impreza, 17" alloys absolute minimum size, ECU remap is preferred to cope with the exhaust, new air filter to help breathing and finally driving lamps are the only mods you should be doing. Any thing else is a waste.
The grip is good enough in standard form, spoiler big enough (except on new age WRX) and finally if you never track it why do you need bigger brakes?

id, spot on with the ideal car

For me the car has to be as standard as possible with official parts (prodrive BB etc). I have a MY00 with the MY99 wheels, yes that's means its still on 16s and the standard spoiler still.

I would love to have a P1 engine as well or even an STi8 ppp engine in it and voila the perfect car for me! It would be standard enough not to be conspicuous and quick enough to scare most things on the road (not to mention lighter than the later STI's which weigh more than Pete after a few pies ).

Wink

I did a lot of track days. When the engine blew up I thought:

"may as well make it stronger so it doesn't blow up"

shortly after I thought:

"may as well make it a bit faster (bigger turbo, fmic, injectors, gems etc cos the engine can take it"

then I thought

"holy **** I can't stop" so brakes were need

then bigger wheels

then suspension

etc etc

What did it achieve?

Helped make up for my inadequate driving on track .
Big wheels/tyres/hard suuspeeeensioooooon meant a std P1/UK would be way faster on a wet UK B Road.
Made me realise who knows what they're doing and the many that don't.
Made me think, "hmmm I could've bought a 911RS - what a ****"

If you have gold wheels and plan to share it with some oiled up leather boys then I have to say that wouldn't be my thing...........however if you plan to fill it with oiled up leather babes then.........I'm there dude.
