Well I had a weekend of test drives - MY03 STI, Evo VI, Golf R32.

WRX - very nicely put together - makes an MY99 feel like a Fiat Strada, great if not 100% assured handling - maybe that comes down to confidence in someone elses' motor though. Low down pull pretty much the same as my existing MY99 Scoob - mid range a lot better, great flexibility and pulling power in the higher gears. Magic sound off the engine :-D

Anyway walked away very impressed, drove home in my now disinctly tinny, sluggish feeling MY99.

Evo drive was later in the day - only one salesguy in the dealership at the weekend so could only test at 4:30ish. 50-60 mile trip for me to get there - some magic driving roads through open country on the way and the old Scoob was beginning to feel magic again!! Silver Evo is sitting in the forecourt already running when I get there - immediate alarm bells - is she a dog? Looks really aggressive in the flesh - fantastic front end - bloody spoiler eats into rear view visibility though!!

Remember those magic open country roads I mentioned!!! Well we didn't go on those - got a 20 minute run to the nearest town and back through the busy late afternoon traffic - pretty straight road aswell, only option to try out the legendary handling was on a roundabout as we headed back - felt pin sharp very impressed - but hey it was just on a f**king roundabout!!! Couple of bursts to overtake - awesome pickup and grunt. Under braking the wheel was shaking like nothing on earth ( lovely steering aswell BTW ) - salestype said it was because it had been lying in store for a while, I think there was some other problem? So 15-20 min test drive on busy road. Can't judge the car, STi had 40-45 mins on some of the best driving roads in Scotland.

R32 - early start on Sunday, been trying to get a shot in one of these for ages. Salesguy isn't in despite arranging a 10:00 drive. Spoke to his colleague and the R32 has been sold - oh well that narrows it down.

Anyhow the old Scoob is going to be replaced on Saturday by an '03 STI. Best balance of performance and running costs for me - plus the dealer treated me well - unlike the others....just counting the days now!!!!

Thumbs up

Funnily enough it was down to another dealer that I bought my Scoob.
I'd gone to a Pug dealer in a neighbouring town to get a drive in a 106GTi, but when I got there the salesman wasn't interested in giving me a drive when it became obvious that I wasn't going to buy there and then.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, the sales manager pointed me at Subarus, and I bought one a week later.
Enjoy.
