Question

I've just been out for a ride in my beloved Scoob, and to be quite honest I just don't believe that it's as quick as the speedo tells me. There was very little traffic around to gauge your speed on, and I suppose that were the problem lies. Cos it just gets up to the speed's so damn quick that it defies belief. OK so the fastest car I've had to date was a Nova SR, but do quick cars really go this quick??? or is my speedo wrong???

Seriously thoughif you don't believe how fast a Scoob is (HERETIC!!!) go time yourself between distance markers on the motorway.

Question

If it's only a week old you should be running it in nice and easy! I didn't start to see what mine could do until I had 1500 miles on the clock....It does go like the wind though!!

Ron,

Back in my student days (not too long ago I may add) I had the usual Uno Turbo, Strada Abarth, 5GT and then bought a 21 Turbo. That was a different league to the hot hatches. It was monsterously fast for a FWD car.

Its when you step up a league that you realise what a fast car really is like. When I bought my STI it was another step up again.

In the week I drive my company car, when I pull the STI out the garage at the weekend its like driving one for the first time all over again, I have the same feeling as you do.

Feels great doesn't it!!!!!!!

I let my mother drive the car today and even she couldn't beleive that the speedo is right, however it only when you compare your speed with other raod users that you get to realise that it probably is right after all, I'll just have to slow down or risk a lost licence, and that would be worse than having my throat cut.

I would have to say that It's correct, I have a 2000 rs in the USA and I have a GPS (global positioning) and that says that my speedo is right on ..

Ron,

When I first got my scoob (MY98 UK car) it was 'OMYGAWD' fast once run in (1500 miles of hell ).

I've now got 'used' to it's speed, even to the point that lately I've started feeling that there is something wrong, because it just doesn't feel as urget as a I remembered. But over the past week a few things have happened to make me rethink this.

1) Driving back from Donno following Paul Willson in his STi II, we compared speedo readings, which I've since checked against the rpm and gear ratios, to discover that my speedo is reading pretty well bang on to within about 1 or 2%. Paul was reading about 75 mph to my 80, he's now being a bit careful

2) Asked a mate who's driven my car quite often and owns an Elise Sport 135 (tempting...) if my car felt as urgent as he remembered, his reply was an emphatic yes, followed by slow down !

3) Went out for a ride in another friend's new toy, an Esprit V8 twin turbo, and couldn't really appreciate a great jump in performance like I did when I went from Corrado to Scoob. Mind you this thing is LOUD! Sports exhaust makes the thing sound like an F1 car, no engine burble, just mechanical violence, rudness , but a tad unsubtle!

I think the moral is, yes the car is damn quick and so easy to drive fast that you don't fully appreciate how fast you are really traveling (100mph plus on most roads is too easy to get to if you aren't carefull). But after a while you'll start to get used to it if you don't reguarly drive something much slower (ie any other mortal machine!) and you'll want more and more power, then there's no hope...

i drive an "a" reg 1.3 escort day to day. I bring out my rsturbo at other times and it amuses me some what.

My rsturbo goes from 120-130 faster than my 1.3 goes from 60-70 and the 1.3 goes well.

its madness.

its also probably the best way to appreciate how fast a truly fast car is.

I drive a Nissan Bluebird 1.6 all week, and more often a Mazda diesel panel van. Both are mind bogglingly slow!

When I get the Scoob out, once every 2 weeks or so, it feels quite effortless, refined, and feels like I've been catapaulted out of each roundabout. But sometimes I feel like I could do with more urge! It's great up to 5000rpm, but not much thereafter.

Drove an Sti5 type R once, with downpipe and filter. Er.....WOW!!!!!!!!

Now that's what I call fast!

Ron,

I'm still running in my MY00 as well and like you, find it hard to believe the speedo is correct!

Loping along at 85 - 90 just doesn't 'feel' the same as my other ( temporary ) car ( Mondeo ) in terms of MPH on motorways / dual carriegeways.

And the acceleration is indeed stellar even now ( and I am being careful! ), and again cannot believe that 60 comes up so quickly and effortlessly. I think the ease of it is what is disconcerting.

Dave.

Cool

I love this jumping speedo-needle and that you have to take new breathe after the gear change....
